Butts County, Georgia, may not sound familiar to many, but fans of the Netflix sci-fi drama “Stranger Things” will definitely find it familiar. Jackson, the county’s seat, has been the setting of the fictional 1980’s town of Hawkins, Indiana, throughout the series. “We get a lot of tourism based on Stranger Things because our downtown was used as the backdrop for the show,” says Kim Freshwater, an 11-year Associate Broker with Century 21 Crowe Realty. “They probably chose Jackson because it looks like it’s straight out of the 1980s. The town is a time capsule. When they shot here, we still had a Radio Shack.” Within Butts County, residents can find rural surroundings and elbow room with small-town amenities always within reach.

Lakes, rivers, springs and hiking trails abound here. “We are the outdoor capital of Georgia,” Freshwater says. “We have a huge hiking trail that starts right in town and it connects to Indian Springs State Park and Dauset Trails.” Butts County offers a myriad of options for outdoor enthusiasts. Jackson Lake is a popular spot for watersports such as water skiing and paddleboarding. Dauset Trails offers 20 miles of hiking and biking trails and frequently hosts events such as the Huff N Puff Marathon, a half-marathon and 5K trail race. Established in 1927, the 528-acre Indian Springs State Park is one of the oldest state parks in the country. But long before then, Native Americans frequented the site’s mineral springs, which are said to have healing properties. People still flock there today to take the water. “The water is a big thing. There are a lot of folks that swear by the water,” Freshwater says. “They bring big jugs to fill up. There’s a line of people waiting their turn.”
