Historic area near downtown Jackson
Just outside downtown Jackson, an unassuming corner at 2nd and Franklin Streets is shaded by several oak trees. There in Jackson's Under the Oaks neighborhood, a historical marker depicts the corner as a gathering place in 1854 of a group that first called themselves Republicans, where a political party was formed by like-minded people who were against slavery. The marker on the site calls that corner the Birthplace of the Republican Party. Today, living in this neighborhood means being part of a designated historic district.

That includes updates to roofs and gutters or replacing windows. Victorian, Colonial and Tudor Revival houses are priced between $120,000 and $330,000. Multi-family homes are also in classic styles like Queen Anne and range from $100,000 to $200,000. The community also includes a handful of condos in the multi-family buildings along Michigan Avenue, a primary thoroughfare that's also lined by houses of worship such as Jackson's First Presbyterian Church, Temple Beth Israel, Central Wesleyan Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church. Condo prices range from about $25,000 to $70,000.
