A quiet rural ambiance near Lakewood’s amenities

Although Whitesville is technically in Jackson Township, its location at the edge of Lakewood Township puts it in a unique position. Residents can plug into either community and often feel like they’re part of both. “It’s a very close-knit community,” says Elhanan Reuven, the owner of Kalamata Italian Café, a popular restaurant in Whitesville. He’s lived in the nearby Lakewood Township for 18 years and opened his restaurant in Whitesville about six years ago. “People help each other out. I’ve had so many customers that came to my restaurant since the beginning and are happy to spend the money and come and enjoy just to be supportive. That was something very, very special.” Whitesville strikes a balance between the two townships. Residents live along Jackson’s more rural streets but have access to Lakewood’s abundant amenities. "There’s certain luxuries of living in this community... many services you’re not going to find in other places,” Reuven says of Lakewood. “The Jewish family has a lot of needs. There’s a lot of guidelines, so a lot of the time you have to do the work yourself. Here, someone will come and do it for you or you can hire a service."

Starter homes on small lots and large houses with acreage

Whitesville’s residential streets are quiet and often have an almost rural atmosphere. There are a few homes lined up closer together like a traditional suburb near the center of the neighborhood, but most of its ranch-style houses, colonials and new traditionals are set along tree-lined country roads that lack sidewalks. Small ranch-style homes toward the center of the neighborhood with just one or two bedrooms and small lots can cost between $200,000 and $300,000. Average or bigger homes on less than an acre often cost between $350,000 and $750,000, but as the neighborhood gets more rural, homes and their properties tend to get bigger. Big houses on an acre or more can range from $650,000 to $1.3 million.

In Whitesville, residents live among quiet, tree-lined streets while staying closely connected to the thriving life of neighboring Lakewood.

Jackson Township’s public schools and nearby yeshivas

The Jackson Township School District gets a B from Niche. Due to a shrinking student population, the district is merging its high schools and closing a middle school. The change may result in longer commutes to school for some students. Children in Whitesville can attend Lucy N. Holman Elementary School, which has a B. Carl W. Goetz Middle School has a B and Jackson Liberty High School, which will be absorbing the district’s other high school, has a B-minus. Jackson Liberty High offers AP classes and vocational courses, the latter of which are through the Ocean County Vocational Technical schools. Although Whitesville’s more rural nature means there aren’t yeshivas inside the neighborhood, Lakewood has dozens of the specialized private schools just a few miles away.

There’s a little collection of shops and restaurants, many of which are Kosher, along the crossroads of South Hope Chapel Road and East Veterans Highway. Kalamata Italian Café, which has a wide variety of Italian dishes as well as a sushi menu, is one of Whitesville’s most popular spots. “I had a passion for food and I had a passion to create — to do things a little bit differently, to really bring out the qualities and take things to a different level that people aren’t used to,” Reuven says of why he chose to open his restaurant.Nearby, C & R’s Pizza Ristorante is a go-to spot to pick up a quick pizza and Jackson Diner is known for its breakfast menu and its 1950s-style interior. There are a few clothing shops, including Sorority and Fame on Central, and groceries are found at Aisle 9 Jackson.

A short drive to golf courses and parks with athletic fields

Whitesville doesn’t have any organized parks, but there are two golf courses just outside it: Eagle Ridge Golf Club, which is a 27-hole championship course open to the public and members, and Pine Barrens Golf Club, a private club with 72 holes spread across its 4 different golf courses. There are several campgrounds just a few miles away, but for a more developed park, Johnson Memorial Park is about 4 miles away. The park offers athletic fields and courts alongside its playground and a popular dog park. Johnson Dog Park features separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, and there’s a water hose where people can fill up bowls for their dogs.

Live entertainment and rides on Jackson Day

Jackson Day is one of the biggest annual events in Jackson Township. It features carnival rides, food and live music typical of similar festivals, but also has special attractions like skydivers, motocross jumpers and a drone light show after dark.

The occasional impact of hurricane season

Just like the rest of New Jersey, hurricanes and tropical storms occasionally pass over Whitesville. This isn’t a yearly occurrence; when it does happen, First Street, a climate risk data organization, says that the neighborhood has a minor risk of flooding and a major risk of high winds.
