The trendy appeal of 1960s-era homes

While it was once a literal gold mine, today, Duval County’s community of Arlingwood has evolved into a residential neighborhood that’s rich in diversity, history and convenience. Residents here enjoy a less than 15-minute drive to Downtown Jacksonville across the St. John's River, giving them easy access to the city's prime shopping, dining and entertainment options. The area is not only increasing in popularity for its proximity to downtown, but for the timeless charm of older homes. “Young people just love the novelty factor of 1960s-era homes right now,” says Lori Neighbors, listing agent and broker with St. Johns Realty group, Assist2Sell. “The retro aesthetic is becoming more popular than the modernism aesthetic. This neighborhood offers new and old homes, but the majority are mid-20th century.”

Waterfront homes on Matthews Manor Drive

The neighborhood is dominated by single-family homes. There’s an abundance of traditional brick, one-story ranch-style houses, but there are also a few two-story models and condos sprinkled throughout the community. On the western side, homes are neatly arranged in a grid-like pattern, allowing residents to navigate easily through the neighborhood, while roads on the eastern side wind and curve. Prices range anywhere from $160,000 to $450,000, with three-bed, two-bath condos on the lower end and three-bed, three-bath traditional houses on the higher end. Waterfront properties can be found along Matthews Manor Drive, Westwick Lane, Salt Lake Drive and at the Merrill Pines Condo Association.

I see many people walking or running when I walk as well as walking their pets. People seem to be pretty active in this area.

Love my neighborhood. Quiet and peaceful. Neighbors are polite and helpful. The only complaint I would have is people speeding.

I had to move in with my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, as I was unable to afford rent in my previous residence and the owner had to sell the property.
