A locals’ suburb close to Jacksonville Beach

Golden Glades/The Woods is just 3 miles inland from Jacksonville Beach, but rather than sunburned tourists wandering through the doors of the neighborhood sports bar, it’s regulars the bartender greets by name. The suburban Jacksonville neighborhood offers proximity to a beach visited by millions every year without sacrificing a local atmosphere. This collection of subdivisions is separated from the city of Jacksonville Beach by the Intracoastal Waterway, a 3,000-mile-long channel where paddlers can explore marshy inlets and boaters can sail to dockside restaurants. Locals can take advantage of the region’s warm climate by hitting the beach, launching onto the Intracoastal from Palm Cove Marina or strolling the neighborhood’s patches of green waterfront.

Exploring the Intracoastal from Castaway Island Preserve

Castaway Island Preserve bridges the distance between the neighborhood and the Intracoastal Waterway. The park’s boardwalks and trails allow locals to take after-work strolls through marshland, and a kayak launch provides an easy way for paddlers to venture onto the Intracoastal. Residents don’t have to own a kayak to explore the saltwater channel; parkgoers can rent paddleboards by using their smartphones at a self-service station. Kids and teens play soccer tournaments on one of the dozen fields at Patton Park, overseen by the First Coast Soccer Association. For an indoor experience, locals may grab dinner while catching a play at Alhambra Theatre & Dining, a 55-year-old venue that’s one of the oldest dinner theaters still operating in the U.S.

Barbecue nights pack the house at Jerry’s Grille

Neighborhood hangouts include Jerry’s Grille, where patrons crowd the family-owned sports bar on Thursday nights when ribs and pulled pork are fresh-smoked. On the opposite end of the neighborhood, some locals worship at The Church of Eleven22’s San Pablo campus. More than 10,000 people attend the Christian church, which operates nine Florida locations including the San Pablo campus. “You actually have to have cops directing traffic on Sunday because it’s insane,” Kim Sessions, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Atlantic Partners who has lived in Jacksonville since 2002. Attendees include Chris Diedrich, founder of Pura Bean Coffee Co. a few doors down. “Every Sunday, we serve scratch-made cinnamon rolls,” Diedrich says. “Those are big sellers.” Shopping centers surround the neighborhood, making it a short drive to essentials such as Winn-Dixie, Walmart or hardware stores. Five miles to the south, locals can seek treatment at Mayo Clinic in Florida, ranked the state’s best hospital.

Residents can choose between gated and ungated lifestyles

The neighborhood consists of thousands of single-family homes spread between multiple subdivisions. About 800 of the neighborhood’s houses sit among the ponds and thickets of The Woods. The gated subdivision was one of the first in northeast Florida when it opened in the ‘70s. The homes tend to be smaller than in nearby neighborhoods, but the security gate and moderate prices attract residents, Sessions says. Other subdivisions include Tamaya, a gated community of custom Mediterranean houses, and Kensington, an ungated collection of ranch-style homes. An abundance of creeks, lakes and ponds offer residents spots for fishing, duck-feeding and scenic walks. However, FEMA reports there are flood zones throughout the neighborhood. Prices begin in the mid-$300,000s for three-bedroom townhouses, rising to the mid-$200,000s for three-bedroom detached homes. There are six-bedroom estates that cost nearly $2 million.

Kernan Middle School offers high school credits

Children don’t have to go far to attend Duval County Public Schools, as Kernan Trail Elementary School and Kernan Middle School are both in the neighborhood. Niche grades Kernan Trail Elementary a B-plus, while Kernan Middle gets a B-minus. At Kernan Middle, students can get a jump on high school by earning credits for courses such as algebra, geometry and Spanish. Four miles to the west, teens can take classes at B-plus-rated Sandalwood High School. Kids can stay in the neighborhood and go to Providence School, an A-rated private Christian school that teaches kindergarten through 12th grade.

Neighbors gather for food

Subdivisions often hold events for neighbors, such as monthly food truck nights in The Woods or weekend potluck parties in Tamaya. Communities usually provide ways for residents to keep up with upcoming events, whether it’s a community newsletter or an announcements page on the subdivision website. A few miles to the east, hundreds of thousands gather around a stage just steps from the beach for Springing the Blues. The three-day April festival has been a Jacksonville Beach tradition since 1991.

Bike to Jacksonville Beach

Major roadways Atlantic Boulevard and Beach Boulevard border the neighborhood to the north and south respectively. Drivers and cyclists can take either road across the Intracoastal Waterway to Jacksonville Beach, less than 4 miles away. There’s little public transportation access, so residents would most likely need to drive the 15-mile route to downtown Jacksonville.

There are a lot of opportunities, but a lot of available jobs are more along the lines of minimum wage or retail. Most people in this area do work; whether it is a good job and/or they like probably varies per individual.

Crime isn't too common in this part of Jacksonville as it is in other parts, so I don't tend to really feel unsafe. I still worry though if I am by myself or out late because when a crime does make the news, those factors seem to be involved.
