A classic midcentury suburb across from Downtown Jacksonville
A well-established midcentury suburb, Lake Lucina blends historical charm with the practical needs of people who work in and around Downtown Jacksonville on the other side of the St Johns River.
The neighborhood draws its name from a small spring-fed lake. While the community started with an 80-acre deed in the 1880s, the lake today is surrounded by relatively quiet neighborhood streets and a boulevard leading to the private campus of Jacksonville University about a mile north.
Some residents are lucky to have a home with Lake Lucina in their backyard.
Jacksonville University has been a part of the Lake Lucina neighborhood sense 1934.

Classic ranch-style homes
"This is a classical Americana type of community,” says Tom Moore, a local real estate agent with Watson Realty Corp. “The area is a midcentury ranch neighborhood, with most homes built during the 1950s to 1970s.” He says many of the neighborhood’s homes contain four bedrooms and three baths with living spaces configured in an open layout. The northeastern section of the community, known as Fairways Forest, was once a golf course that was later converted into a housing development. Homes around there range from around $300,000 to $450,000, while smaller cinderblock residences west of it sell for between $150,000 to $300,000. Jose Gonzalez, a local agent with Keller Williams Realty, says the lower-cost homes tend to attract more working-class households because of their relative affordability. “They’re solid homes, and you can renovate them again and again,” he says. “But they don’t have high ceilings and they’re not very roomy. And they’re all very much next to each other.”
Most of the homes in Lake Lucina have good-sized yards and some have wide driveways.

Arts magnet program available at Fort Caroline Middle School
Many of the area’s students learn at Lake Lucina Elementary, which earns a C-plus rating from Niche. From there, students can advance to the 6-8 Arlington Middle School. Niche gives it a C-minus. Alternatively, artistic and creative-leaning kids can apply to Fort Caroline Middle School’s Visual and Performing Arts magnet program. Older students may enroll in the advanced career courses nearby at the C-rated Terry Parker High School. The neighborhood also borders the campus of Jacksonville University, a part of the area since 1950.

Supermarkets, fast-food eateries and international cuisine on University Boulevard and Merrill Road
At Lake Lucina Shopping Center on Merrill Road, one of the area’s main thoroughfares, residents can visit service providers, restaurants, and discount stores. Along this commercial stretch to the north and University Boulevard to the west, locals have even more access to the area's generous retail and dining experiences. Residents can restock kitchen supplies and home goods at Publix on Dames Point Plaza or the Neighborhood Walmart inside the Merrill Station shopping center. In addition to a few national fast-food chains, restaurants in the corridor include the University Diner and local takeout spots such as J Lemon Pepper Fish & Chicken and THC Trap House Chicken. At Scoreboard Sports Bar & Grill, patrons can hang out as they eat or sip on refreshments while others play pool or wait their turn for karaoke on Thursday nights. Gonzalez says there’s also a diverse array of restaurants in the area that represent the community’s ethnic diversity. Mi Veracruz offers authentic Mexican-style dishes that pair well with the in-house micheladas and margaritas. And around the corner from Lake Lucina Drive on University Boulevard, Seven Wonders has evolved from a small Haitian-style bakery to a restaurant serving classic Caribbean flavors.

Flowers and more at nearby Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
After the last school bell of the day rings, families flock to the playground and basketball courts park next to Lucina Lake Elementary. Nearby is Victory Park, a 10-acre gathering spot with tennis courts and soccer fields. Those looking to further immerse themselves in the outdoors can visit the nature preserves at Tree Hill Nature Center. For an admission fee, locals can hike the verdant grounds, meet mini goats at the petting zoo and visit the onsite natural history museum. Five miles to the east awaits the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, an expansive public green space of interwoven trails surrounded by native shrubs and trees.

Reaching downtown on the Matthews Bridge
Motorists can reach Downtown Jacksonville by taking the Matthews Bridge about 2 miles south of the neighborhood. Interstate 295 is also about 2 miles away, making it easy for folks to get around the metro area. Jacksonville Transportation Authority provides bus transit service around the community too. Those who prefer to travel on the water can embark at the Arlington Road Boat Ramp. Moore says the neighborhood hosts a voluntary civic association, and that residents can easily keep their private boats within their subdivisions. The river leads to the Atlantic Ocean about 15 miles east, allowing for maritime voyages and weekend beach days.
The I-295 beltway is close by giving Lake Lucina easy access to the rest of Jacksonville.
The JTA bus line runs right through the Lake Lucina neighborhood.
