An affordable post-war community along the Broward River
San Mateo is a post-World War II suburb along the Broward River, initially developed for veterans. The North Jacksonville community's first house was constructed in 1955, and hundreds more popped up in the following decade. They sold at affordable rates between $13,000 and $17,000, and many homebuyers put down initial payments as low as 10 dollars. Today, housing prices are generally below the Jacksonville Metro Area average, according to a Homes.com calculation. The neighborhood's midcentury modern architecture and mature landscape are defining characteristics, and nearby restaurants, like Cleo's Sandwich Shop, are community pillars.
Cleos Sandwich Shop has a loyal following and has been serving San Mateo for many years.
