Rural living in the wilderness west of Jacksonville
For people who want to escape the sounds and fast-paced life of the city, Baker County's little community of Sanderson/Glen St. Mary may be the next move. "It's a nice, rural hidden gem that's warm and welcoming," says Cindy Oglesby, a Realtor with Southwest Realty Group, whose office is in the area. While indoor recreation and shopping are limited compared to nearby neighborhoods, the community makes up for it in thousands of acres of wilderness. "A lot of people enjoy the fact that you're near the forest for hunting, fishing, and camping," Oglesby says. Old brick buildings, including Glen St. Mary town hall and the volunteer fire station, line Glen Avenue, and oak trees with dangling Spanish moss grow along medians. Grassy landscapes and trails intertwined between pine trees can be found in nearby parks like Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park, home to one of Florida's most significant Civil War battles. Oglesby says Baker County is growing, and the area's natural beauty and small-town hospitality continue to draw buyers to the area.
