Suburban island lifestyle on Narragansett Bay
Jamestown Shores is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Jamestown, beaten out for the first-place title only by the village center. On Conanicut Island, separated from the Rhode Island mainland and nearby Aquidneck Island by Narragansett Bay, Jamestown has a laid-back, coastal New England atmosphere. Real Broker Justin Mandese, a Realtor with nearly 20 years of local experience, says Jamestown and Aquidneck’s Newport are often compared because of their proximity. “But there are distinct differences. Jamestown is still primarily owner-occupied homes. There’s a certain pride of ownership here, where the culture is more preserved and the community is more connected,” he says, observing that Newport has more vacation homes. Mandese: “Newport is where you go if you want to be in the action; Jamestown is more relaxed.” Rhode Island local Jess Powers, a Realtor with eXp’s Hope State Living, agrees. “It’s not densely populated at all,” she says, observing that Jamestown Shores, in particular, is by no means crowded, though it’s the town’s biggest neighborhood. “It’s small and it’s very sleepy,” she says. For homebuyers looking for a quiet, beachy town without tourist hubbub, that’s the point.

From modest summer cottages to modern Traditional homes
Many of Jamestown Shores’ original late-1800s and early 1900s-era summer cottages still stand, set back from the narrow streets by neat lawns framed by flower beds and boxwood hedges. Decorative Bradford pear, cherry and maple trees provide shade. Between the quaint, cedar-shingled cottages are 1960s and 70s-era split-level and ranch-style homes, even some Traditional new construction. Sales prices start at around $560,000 and can go up to over $3 million. “The homes along the shoreline have the most amazing view of the sunset, over the water looking toward North Kingstown,” Mandese says, observing that newer waterfront homes tend to sell for more than older inland homes. “There are some beautiful, expensive homes over there,” he says. But a small catch is the noise from the Jamestown Bridge, which is close to the neighborhood’s south end. Mandese: “The road noise is pretty significant, so that is something to consider in those spots. But aside from that, it’s a really nice, tucked-away neighborhood with small streets. And it’s certainly still a great place to live.”

Jamestown School District sends high schoolers off-island
The Jamestown School District is a two-school system. Melrose Avenue School serves youngsters between preschool and fourth grade, while Lawn School serves fifth through eighth graders. Melrose and Lawn both earn A-minus grades from Niche. Students can choose between A-rated North Kingstown High and A-minus-rated Narragansett High for ninth through 12th grade. The high schools are in nearby towns on the mainland; they provide off-island bus transport to Jamestown students. At North Kingstown, the Running Start Program allows students to earn dual high school and college credit for courses taken during their senior year. Narragansett High offers a Future Farmers of America agriscience program. Agriscience classes are held in the school’s state-of-the-art greenhouse, where students grow and care for house plants, vegetables and flowers while in the program.
Narragansett High school is usually within the top 10 high schools in the state.
Jamestown Lawn School has 193 students in grades 5-8 with a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1.

Head’s Beach sunsets and waterfront views from the Jamestown Golf Course
Head’s Beach is at the end of Garboard Street, within a mile of most homes. “The coastline there is very beautiful, and it’s protected and undisturbed. That’s one of the benefits of Rhode Island. High rises basically don’t exist on our coastline,” Powers says. The pebbly, shell-strewn waterfront is swimmable, and there are picnic tables on the adjacent grassy bluff. To the east, Godena and Watson farms are historic, working farms. “It’s small, locally distributed, farm-to-table type farming, with long driveways that have signs at the end saying ‘fresh berries’ or ‘fresh pies.’ It’s not a big commercial farming area,” Mandese says. About 3 miles southeast of Jamestown Shores, the public, 9-hole Jamestown Golf Course looks out on Narragansett Bay from the opposite side of Conanicut. Mandese: “It’s a really nice course, in really good condition, and they have a recently redesigned clubhouse there, too, so it’s a really great spot.”

Shop and dine in the village center
While Jamestown Shores doesn’t have a central commercial district, downtown Jamestown, known locally as the Village area, is less than 4 miles southeast. The locally owned McQuade’s Marketplace is a one-stop shop for grocery staples, deli items and baked goods. “The downtown business scene includes a few small local gift shops, a few coffee shops, a handful of restaurants, professional services such as attorneys, a mortgage broker, one bank, a liquor store,” Bailey says. “Narragansett Café is the local watering hole, what most people call a dive bar. It’s where all the locals hang out. They have live music on the weekends and no cover charge on Sundays,” he says, adding that the mainstay has been around for decades. Bailey also recommends Beech, a popular upscale Italian American restaurant nearby.

Rhode Island Route 138 connects to the mainland and Aquidneck Island
While Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus stops are available on Rhode Island Route 138, which runs through the neighborhood’s south end, Jamestown Shores is largely a car-dependent community. It’s also not very walkable, apart from its proximity to Head’s Beach. “The Village area is the main walkable part of town,” Bailey says, adding that there are more bus stops downtown, with service to Newport and the University of Rhode Island in North Kingstown. “That’s also where there’s an Amtrak station, you can take the train to New York City,” he adds. Bailey notes that most locals commute off-island via Route 138 for work. Heading east on the highway, North Kingstown is about 6 miles away; heading west, Newport is just a 7-mile drive.
