More than 15 years after Janesville suffered a significant economic setback, the city is resurging with a newly invigorated downtown community. "After the General Motors plant closed at the end of 2008, the downtown was still suffering with big box stores opening in the suburbs,” says Paul Williams, a Janesville City Council member speaking of the plant closing that put 3,000 people out of work. “Over the past ten years, new trendy businesses have opened and attracted a younger group of people. It’s a diverse mix of people there.” The revitalization includes sprucing up old buildings that now house restaurants and locally owned stores and boutiques.

Activities around downtown Janesville
From June through August, on Tuesday evenings, Courthouse Park is the site for Music at the Marv, a summer concert series at the Marvin Roth Community Pavilion on the west end of the park near Main Street. The pavilion has amphitheater-style seating that accommodates about 300 people. The park has 3 acres with walking paths and small green spaces. Someone could be in the grassy area outside of the pavilion and would be able to hear the performance. Chief David Moore Playground is a small corner park at the intersection of Franklin Street and Laurel Avenue. The Ice Age Trail, which covers a lot of Janesville and goes throughout the state, follows the Rock River on the west side. The trail is named because it follows the path of a glacier that covered the area about 12,000 years ago. The trail covers more than 1,000 miles as it crisscrosses the state. Janesville Town Square hosts the Janesville Farmers Market, which runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays from May through October. The town square also has The Bubbler, an interactive splash pad for hot summer days. Since winter gets cold, there are indoor activities downtown, including catching a comedy show, concert or theater performance at the Janesville Performing Arts Center.
