The industrial section south of Janesville
Residential growth in Janesville has occurred mostly north of downtown, leaving commercial and industrial development more concentrated to the south. The development has led to the arrival of a couple of large employers in the last 10 years. "There’s a million-and-a-half-square-foot Dollar General distribution center. Also, SHINE manufactures a product used in medical imagery,” says Paul Williams, a Janesville City Council member. This has led to an influx of job opportunities for residents of the Rivereast neighborhood, located about 4 miles south of downtown and east of the Rock River. The Dollar General distribution center employs almost 500 people, while about 200 work at SHINE. Both are on the east side of the neighborhood. The arrival of these jobs has curbed the impact of GM closing its local plant in 2008, which employed about 1,000. In addition to nearby employment opportunities, Rivereast offers access to Jainesville’s numerous parks and shopping and dining within a few miles from home.
Dollar General Distribution Center plays a key role in the cities economy featuring jobs.
The Rock River is popular for fishing and boating, with access near the neighborhood.
