Slow-paced life 30 miles from Baltimore

It’s a slow-paced lifestyle in the rural town of Jarrettsville, where locals enjoy the wide open spaces of their yards and adjoining farmland. The hub of this laid back community 30 miles north of Baltimore revolves around the town center, home to local businesses and other small town resources like the local library, sheriff’s office and fire department. William Stevenson, Realtor with Long & Foster Real Estate and owner of Jarrettsville Creamery & Deli, has called Jarrettsville home since 1978. He says it’s that small-town feel that has kept him and his wife there for decades. “It’s a tight-knit community and everyone is very friendly,” says Stevenson. “We always help each other out and it just feels like home.”

Sprawling farms with ranch-style and Cape Cods

With Jarrettsville in the rural countryside of Harford County, most homes are situated on one or more acres of land, many of which come with beautiful views of woods, sprawling farms and their own wide open yards. There are several ranch-style and Cape Cod-style houses built between the 1970s and 1990s, which sell for around $350,000 to $650,000. Prices vary depending on the size of the property and if there are any renovations. New traditional homes from the early 2000s through today are also very common. They can range anywhere from 2,500 to 7,000 square feet, selling for $700,0000 to more than $2 million.

Town center with local restaurants

The town center is located along Jarrettsville and Federal Hill Roads, which intersect in the heart of town. They’re lined with a few dozen local businesses that serve the community. Locals enjoy shopping for consigned furniture in the 8,000-square-foot space of Belle Patri, searching for tools at Smith Hardware and finding what they need for their furry friends at Lil’ Pets. The neighborhood is home to two local restaurants. Residents hit up J’Ville Grille for American grub and a fun night of live music and trivia. Across the street, Jarrettsville Creamery and Deli is a popular spot to grab a sandwich, polished off with homemade ice cream. For more shopping and dining options, locals can drive 10 miles to Bel Air, which has tons of shopping centers with big box retailers.

Lack of highways and speeding traffic

There are no major highways in or near Jarrettsville, so the roads are typically slow and steady. It’s about a 30-mile drive south to Baltimore with no heavily-trafficked roads until commuters reach Interstate 695 about halfway to the city.

Local sunflower fundraiser

Residents look out for one another in Jarrettsville through local fundraisers. Jarrettsville Creamery & Deli raises funds twice a week for anything from local schools to youth sports teams. “Whenever we have fundraisers, they are very well supported and the community really gets involved and engaged,” Stevenson says. One of the town’s biggest fundraisers of the year is called Sunflowers in Jarrettsville, organized by local churches and businesses. Folks from all over come to visit the sunflower field across from the sheriff’s office. “It’s a really big thing we do every year,” says Stevenson, “Thousands upon thousands of people come and all the proceeds go back into the community to assist people who just need some help, such as a house fire.”

Its great, lots of smaller sweet shops that are family owned. People are very nice and some of the views are amazing depending on where you are.

Been living here my whole life, the only major downfall is that there's not any stores within walking distance and since it's not a neighborhood area there's nothing but roads.
