At less than a square mile in size, the tiny Jenkintown holds considerable weight in the hearts of those who call this borough home. "Jenkintown is a walkable town with a close community of people. We have our own public school system and festivals in the Townsquare," says Sean Ryan, a Jenkintown local and Realtor with Keller Williams Real Estate. Aside from the commercial district on Old York Road, the neighborhood is primarily residential.

Many homes show Colonial influences with symmetrical designs and dormer windows. Jenkintown also features many charming Tudor houses made of stone and visible wood frames. You will see a number of picturesque cottages with gambrel rooftops reminiscent of farmhouses and log cabins. Locals also find convenient living in the many neighborhood condo developments, such as Beaver Hill. Houses can enter the market from $250,000 to over $600,000 for larger residences. Most homes cost buyers between $200 to $300 per square foot.

The School District of Jenkintown serves the young minds of the community and is considered one of the top 10 districts in Montgomery County, according to Niche. "The borough doesn't have a busing system because the students walk to school," Ryan says. In the morning, young residents may attend Jenkintown Elementary until the end of sixth grade. The remaining students may spend the school day at Jenkintown Middle/High, promising an 11 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio, lower than the national average of 17 to 1. Both schools earned overall A grades on Niche. Parents may also choose the private, faith-based option, Immaculate Conception BVM, located on West Avenue.

Ralph Morgan Park is just past West Avenue and right outside the borough. This small gathering space attracts locals seeking a peaceful outdoor retreat next to the neighborhood. Little ones enjoy the tot lot while joggers and walkers follow a meandering trail along the calm, shallow waters of Tacony Creek. The 5.5-acre park also has a half basketball court and a memorial dedicated to a local Commissioner of the neighboring Cheltenham Township.

The walkable downtown business district is centered around Old York Road, flowing north to south. To restock your kitchen and home supplies, visit ACME Markets. Along the bustling commercial corridor are several retail plazas; The Pavilion is one of the most notable hubs that contain service providers and eateries. Ryan says that Jenkintown is brimming with local places to eat downtown. He recommends Drake Tavern, Lilly's Authentic Indian Cuisine, and the local watering hole, Kings Corner. Also, residents can enjoy the morning air while sitting outside and enjoying a latte and pastry at White House Coffee and Creamery.

Those looking for entertainment may visit Hiway Theater, a historic gem that's been a part of Jenkintown since 1913. The single-screen cinema is a community-based, nonprofit establishment featuring art films, classic movie restorations and new releases. Avid golfers may tee off on the Abington Club fairways, just outside the borough. The municipal government and community members have joined together to create a plan focusing on the borough's future expansion through a project titled Jenkintown2035. This and other local efforts support the beloved community of Jenkintown as well as the residents who live there.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
