A peaceful oasis near downtown
On the outskirts of Downtown Joliet, the Preston Heights neighborhood is a primarily residential area that has great access to all the city excitement without sacrificing its peace and quiet. People can visit Joliet for all its museums, casinos and other entertainment options, then come home to a friendly neighborhood with people from all walks of life. “It’s a small and quiet community. I’m sure the neighbors get to know each other,” says Douglas Geissler, a Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Circle who owned a property in Preston Heights for over 10 years. “I had a good experience as a homeowner there, and there’s not a lot of crime to worry about.”

Friendly priced small homes
Homes in Preston Heights are a bit smaller compared to the ones in Cherry Hill, but they’re also more conveniently priced. “In terms of affordability, it’s on the lower end of being able to buy a home,” Geissler says. Older ranch-style homes that are around 850 square feet can be found for anywhere between $100,000 to $175,000. However, more modern ones with over 1200 square feet can get up to $335,000. Split-levels and prairie-style homes also line the neighborhood streets for similar prices. Modern Mobile Home Park off Zurich Road provides lots for sale or rent for those who need a lower cost of living.
Some of the homes in Preston Heights are large with spacious yards.

Drive or take the bus to work
As a predominantly residential neighborhood, Preston Heights is centrally located near several major highway systems. “There has been expansive and explosive growth for all the intermodal activities in Elwood and South Joliet,” Geissler says. Most residents drive their own vehicle to and from places, using Interstate 52, US Interstate 80 and Route 53 to get there. However, bus stops all along South Chicago Street provide public transportation throughout the neighborhood for those who need it. The Joliet Metra Train Station is 2.5 miles away and can connect people to the Rock Island (RI) and Heritage Corridor (HC) lines.
Kindergarten through eigth grade learn together
Families living in Preston Heights have a couple of options on where to send their children to school. Laraway Elementary School may have a D-plus grade on Niche, but it also has a 10-1 student-teacher ratio and handles kindergarten through eighth grade. Another option is Joliet Public School District No. 86. Both Edna Keith Elementary School and Dirksen Jr High School have a C-minus Niche grade. From there, students can attend Joliet Central High School. Its B-minus Niche grade and career academies that place its students into career-focused programs can set children up for success.

Walk along bridges over the creek
When residents need a break from their routine, there are a few parks in the area for them to explore. Nowell Park is situated along two major roads yet still provides the refreshing green space the community needs. In addition to the basketball courts and baseball field, the park also has paved walking paths and bridges that cross Sugar Run Creek. Residents visit the Nowell Park Recreation Center for workouts in the fitness center or to participate in its seasonal programs. Oak Valley Park is another green space in the neighborhood that’s great for outdoor recreation. Little ones can explore the playground area while their parents toss a frisbee.

Shopping for essentials is easy for residents of Preston Heights. While the neighborhood itself is mostly made up of homes, its proximity to different highway systems makes it convenient for people to travel to nearby retail areas. Downtown Joliet is only 2.4 miles north on South Chicago Street and has a plethora of shopping and dining options. People can enjoy a pancake breakfast at Joliet Route 66 Diner or something more savory at Cross Street Grill inside Harrah’s Casino. For everyday items, locals travel 4.8 miles west to the large commercial retail space at the intersection of Interstate 52 and Highway 7. They get their groceries from Jewel-Osco or Sam’s Club. The area also has car dealerships, several hotels, a barbershop and Jefferson Center shopping mall. For those who want to stay closer to home, Doggy Dogs is right in the neighborhood and serves up loaded hot dogs and sausage platters.
