Older Joplin neighborhood seeing home improvements
In northeast Joplin, McKinley is a neighborhood that sprang up in the early 20th century as development spread outward from the city center. In a city where nearly 7,500 homes and businesses were destroyed by a tornado in 2011, this neighborhood is notable for the unique architecture that remains from the early days. The neighborhood is moving into the future with a trend of home renovations. With an elementary school in the center and shopping hubs to the east and west, it's a popular neighborhood to fix up a home, especially with a median single-family price of $95,000. "People are going into it thinking of it as a blank slate, thinking, 'This is how I can affordably buy a home and renovate it myself," says Silas Belcher, Realtor with Pro 100 Inc., Realtors. "For people who want to make a house a home, they can really put their mark on it and make the improvements they want."
Small cottages and bungalows with curb appeal
This is a residential area with single-family homes arranged in a neat grid. Many are from the early 20th century, with some dating as far back as 1910. These include cottages with brick chimneys, colorful shutters, arched doorways and other unique exterior elements. There are also bungalows with roofs covering pront porches. Front yards tend to be small but neatly mowed, with enough space for a swinging bench. Smaller homes around 1,000 square feet help drive the affordability of this neighborhood. Prices range between $65,000 and $150,000, which helps leave room for renovation budgets. Repairs vary from house to house, but roofs and siding are a common fix. Buyers should be aware of lead paint when remodeling.

Shopping and dining options are close at hand, from downtown Joplin to Seventh Street to Rangeline Road. "McKinley is right in the center of all three, so if you want a bite to eat, you're close to everything," Belcher says. About 1.5 miles west, downtown Joplin has a growing foodie scene. There, 530 Somewhere serves craft cocktails and hearty entrees such as Spaghetti Western, topped with signature chili, pickles, onions and Romano cheese. A mile east is the area's main commercial hub with retailers such as Target and Kohl's. A bit further north up Rangeline is Northpark Mall, an indoor shopping center with common mall stores such as T.J. Maxx, JCPenney, Hot Topic and H&M. Seventh Street is another commercial area bordering McKinley to the south. There, Walmart Neighborhood Market is the closest spot for a pantry refill.

Joplin celebrates African American heritage
Joplin events are close by, at local parks and the city center. Ewert Park hosts the annual Emancipation Celebration in August, a Joplin tradition for over 100 years, aiming to educate about African American freedom and achievement. The three-day event features live music, storytelling, comedy, a kid-friendly outdoor movie and a domino tournament, culminating in a church service and car show on Sunday. Celebrations take place regularly in downtown Joplin, such as the Empire Market, an indoor market held every Saturday showcasing a variety of local vendors and live music.
Seventh Street leads to downtown Jopin
This neighborhood is connected to the rest of Joplin by Seventh Street, which borders the neighborhood's south side and also intersects with the historic Route 66. This road leads to downtown Joplin, 1.5 miles west, and the Rangeline Road business district, 1 mile east. Public transportation is lacking here, but the city does provide Metro Area Public Transit System rides per request.
