Quiet community near hospitals and highways
In Joplin's medical district, Mohaska draws healthcare workers and traveling professionals with nearby hospitals and highways. This neighborhood rebuilt stronger after the 2011 Joplin tornado, adding new homes, parks, and a medical school campus. Single-family homes are sandwiched between Kansas City University's Joplin medical school to the west and a busy commercial scene to the east. Despite all the activity surrounding it, this residential pocket maintains a quiet vibe where a lot of the traffic is foot traffic. "You've got families walking their dogs, school buses will drop kids off at one spot, and they'll talk to their homes down the block," says Jayce Kaughman, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elevate and former resident of the area. "It's still a super friendly community."

Affordable cottages, bungalows and Minimal Traditionals
Mohaska's northern block has New Traditional homes where the tornado touched down. South of that are Tudor-inspired cottages, Minimal Traditionals and bungalows from the early-to-mid 20th century. Many are situated on smaller lots with sloping front yards and stairwells leading up to front doors. Prices range from $148,000 to $260,000. "They're not all brand new builds, so it's more affordable for those in medical school for 4 or 5 years who aren't necessarily ready to go in and put $300,000 toward a brand new home, Kaughman says." Sidewalks are situated throughout the area, contributing to the culture of walking.

American classics at Tropicana Bar and Grill
Shopping and dining are a highlight here as Main Street adds more and more businesses. In addition to fast food options, the local restaurants are neighborhood hot spots. "You've got hole-in-the-wall restaurants down there that are thriving — every day you drive by, it seems like they're packed," Kaughman says. Tropicana Bar and Grill serves signature burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and drinks in a spacious two-story dining area. Locals also fill up the four outdoor patios. Crazy Llama Coffee opened here in 2023, building on the success of its original Webb City location. It's a popular spot for espresso drinks and handheld breakfast items. Aldi and Walmart Neighborhood Market are just beyond Mohaska's western border.

Teens can work toward an associate degree along with their high school diploma. Kansas City University oversees osteopathic medicine and dental medicine colleges within the neighborhood.
Mercy Park symbolizes strong community spirit
Mercy Park is a symbol of Joplin's tornado recovery. This park opened in 2017 on the original site of Mercy Hospital, which was destroyed in 2011. The city turned the site into a natural grassy landscape dotted by 30 species of deciduous trees, prairie flowers and a fishing pond. Paved pathways loop around the park. Between 2019 and 2024, local Rotary Clubs planted 30 bronze sculptures along the walkways. A butterfly mural in the park honors the city's transformation. "Every time you drive by, that's what you think about," Kaughman says. "That was a time when the community was at a low based on what everybody had lost, and it's a visual of how in dark times the community can come together and really uplift each other."

Each December, area businesses decorate and display evergreens at the annual Holiday Tree Trail. The event features a live performance, hot chocolate and a visit with Santa.
