Rural roots near downtown Kansas City
Turner is a suburban neighborhood still in touch with its rural roots. “You can still see people traveling on horseback,” says Francene Sutton, broker and owner of Gemini II Inc. Realtors and a longtime Turner resident. “It really is a country community within the city.” The area was once a sea of agriculture named “Farmer,” though Turner is now home to rows of ranch-style homes, ample parkland and a high density of schools. Residents here embrace the Turner High School mascot — the Golden Bears — as an emblem of the entire community. Just 10 miles southwest of downtown Kansas City, the railyard and industrial zone just north of the neighborhood highlight the neighborhood's proximity to the urban core.

Midcentury ranch homes on former farmland
Much of the area’s ranch-style development dates back to the 1950s, though buyers can find split-levels and raised ranches built between the 1970s and the 2000s. Many homes combine brick or stone foundations with vinyl siding, and some employ Craftsman elements. Prices typically range between $130,000 and $300,000 and are highly dependent on the amount of updates the home has seen. Homes are far less spread out than in the neighborhood’s farming days, though neighbors still enjoy privacy through fenced backyards and tree-studded lots.

Fishing at Pierson Park, plus farming and fine art
Fitting for a former farm community, Turner offers plenty of opportunities to get outside. Locals kick back around the lake at Pierson Park, which has a wheelchair-accessible dock for fishing. Children 15 and under can compete in the park’s annual Fishing Derby in categories such as largest catch and most unique catch. The skate park, splash pad and playground are also popular with local kids.
Residents have access to fresh-grown produce and can even farm their own within the neighborhood. The Turner Community Garden has rentable plots and hosts a weekly produce market in late summer. KC Farm School also has a farmers market and offers vocational education and other programming, giving people hands-on experience growing food.
The Turner Community Library makes space for artistic expression, hosting monthly painting classes in the style of famous artists. The library also puts on Turner Art Challenges on-site and in a café within the community. “We put up supplies, sometimes it’s families that create, sometimes it’s little kids, sometimes it’s elderly people,” says Aaron Froelich, branch manager of the library. “They all learn from each other about what they’re doing.”
