Enjoying the outdoor recreation in East Bottoms

When picturing stereotypical city living, most don’t anticipate that parks and outdoor recreation might be a significant part of urban life; however, East Bottoms in Kansas City, also known as KC, proves it can. It’s located in the middle of the Columbus Park Industrial District and right beside the Northeast Industrial District. While residents can hear the constant chugging of trains arriving and departing nearby, it’s a fair trade for its proximity to the Missouri River and the historic River Market district, a hub for the area’s extensive food and shopping scene.

1926, the park was renamed “Columbus Square” due to the large number of Italian immigrants.

Urban KC's suprising amount of green space

This historic community was once known as the “North End” and “Little Italy.” Traces of this history can be found in the name of the sprawling, green Columbus Park, which includes a playground, walking paths, picnic tables, and verdant fields. Kessler Park is a prominent gathering space with a unique colonnade and a public disc golf course. Locals can enjoy peace by the North Terrace Park Lake, within walking distance. A sunny afternoon is best spent at Berkley Riverfront’s volleyball courts, Heritage Trails, Harrison Street DIY Skate Park or the Pendelton Heights Community Garden. Besides seeing a Chiefs Game at the Arrowhead Stadium, locals enjoy a game at the Kansas City Soccer Dome and live music at Knuckleheads off Rochester Avenue or the Bally’s Casino a few blocks away.

Locals wander through City Market’s cafes, bakeries and specialty grocers about a half-mile walk down Walnut Street; restaurants like City Diner, Homesteader and The Farmhouse line the next few blocks. Market Cosentino’s Downtown Market is located on Main Street in the Kansas Power and Light District for bigger grocery hauls. The P&L District occupies the city’s nightlife scene with venues like KC Live! on Grand Boulevard and is home to renowned venues near Central Street, such as the Kauffman Center and Kansas City Music Hall.
