Business and pleasure mix well in this downtown neighborhood

The Financial District isn’t all business all the time. For people who live in its condos packed alongside banks and courthouses, it’s home. Those who work and live here can skip driving and use the free streetcar. People walk to their offices or favorite restaurants and cafes during rush hour and lunchtime. Conveniently located a mile and a half from downtown Kansas City, the Financial District is close to some of K.C.’s favorite entertainment and dining districts. Although concrete is more prevalent than green space here, locals don’t have far to go to find a grassy retreat from the urban hardscape.

All the benefits of top entertainment districts without the nighttime hubbub

“It’s a more relaxed atmosphere than in Crossroads or the Power and Light district. It’s not right in the busyness of Crossroads or Power and Light. There’s a separation. But people here can still walk or take the streetcar to any of those spots,” Jen Hulen says. Hulen is the leasing manager for KC CentralLofts in the nearby Library District. Locals are within a mile of Crossroads, River Market and the Power and Light District. The elegant American Reserve with 20-foot ceilings and Bristol Seafood Grill are just a couple of many elegant restaurants in the Power and Light District. Locals can grab fresh produce at City Market in the River Market area. Kansas Citians can still find the latest fashions in Crown Center, two miles from Hall’s, where locals have shopped since 1916. Crown Center features several specialty shops, such as the Crayola Store. Locals can grab groceries at Cosentino’s at 13th and Main.

Locals can skip driving, gas and parking by opting for free streetcar

The KC Streetcar includes several convenient stops around the neighborhood along Main Street. Hulen knows several people who take it to work. “Even I do sometimes. It’s usually not super busy during the week. There are people who don’t have cars who live down here,” she says. Drivers have easy access to Interstates 35, 70 and 670 leading out of the city. The Kansas City International Airport is 20 miles away.

K.C. Fringe Festival celebrates all that is weird and wonderful about K.C.

Music and entertainment fans are in an ideal spot to take advantage of Kansas City’s most renowned venues, each under a mile away. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts features world-class music performances. Fans can catch their favorite big-ticket acts at the T-Mobile Center in the Power and Light District. In 2024, the K.C. Fringe Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary, Kansas City’s two-week arts and culture celebration.

Condo living in grand old buildings

Residential buildings in the Financial District favor a modernist style. Residents can choose from one-bedroom condos in the mid-to-upper- $100,000s to upper$200,000s. Two-bedroom condos are priced in the $300,000s to $400,000s. The median list price is $283,000, and homes stay on the market for 18 days compared to the average of 42 days in the U.S. Many loft-style condos feature soaring ceilings, timber beams and exposed brick walls. Amenities often include rooftop pools, entertainment areas, gyms, and Wi-Fi-enabled workspaces. Buildings often have unexpected beginnings. For example, the 6-story condo building Coffee Lofts was a textile plant built in 1916. Residents living on higher floors can enjoy glittering nighttime views of lively surrounding districts.
