Deeply rooted in jazz
There's a lot more to the neighborhood of Forgotten Homes than the substantial and architecturally impressive estates abandoned by members of Kansas City's high society. It's a community with deep historical roots within the city's jazz scene, made possible by its prominent and influential Black population in the 1950s. When Kansas City's first integrated roadways were built here, Forgotten Homes began to attract all walks of life to shows at Folly Theater, a vaudeville and burlesque house, and the nearby Muehlebach Hotel at Twelfth and Wyandotte streets, a now restored cocktail and jazz lounge. With its historic appeal and proximity to the Missouri River and downtown area, it's no wonder why Forgotten Homes has become a little less forgotten in the last decade.

The not-so-forgotten homes
Sitting along hilly streets lined with sidewalks are four square homes with dormer windows and shaded front porches or renovated three-bedroom Craftsman-style residences selling anywhere from $140,000 to $180,000. Empty lots in Forgotten Homes offer clean slates for roughly $11,000 along Agnes Avenue and $64,000 off Madison Avenue. Those priced closer to $1 million are likely brick Victorian estates with over four bedrooms and two and a half baths. Properties have either been flipped or await improvements and sell within a month.
Queen Anne-inspired brick homes are common throughout the Forgotten Homes community.
Some homes in Forgotten Homes have 2 car garages or wrap-around front porches.
