K.C. neighborhood cultivates community self-determination
Manheim Park is a vibrant, diverse midtown neighborhood known for taking charge of its own destiny. The long, narrow neighborhood 4 miles south of downtown Kansas City stretches from Emmanuel Cleaver II Blvd and Brush Creek to the south to E. 39th Street between Troost Avenue and The Paseo.
Active community members have built an active community garden where neighbors raise chickens and grow their own food, donating produce to local food pantries.
"It's quite a little gem in the center of the neighborhood with 10 raised community beds and a few garden areas that people rent," Dan Krull says.
Krull has lived in the area for eight years and is a member of the Manheim Park Community Garden Board.

Public transportation is another option, with RideKC stops on Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard, Troost Avenue and The Paseo. Bike lanes are available along The Paseo and on E. 43rd Street east of The Paseo. Large shirtwaist-style homes dominate urban streetscape
When asked to describe the neighborhood vibe, Realtor Tiffany Sykes of Paris Plains Realty says it's a variation on all walks of life.
"Manheim Park appeals to people who like a more diverse community, urban living, younger people, maybe some families, and first-time home buyers," she says.
Around 65% of residents rent their homes and rental property comprises nearly a quarter of the neighborhood.
The predominant style of the neighborhood is the spacious Craftsman-like multi-story shirtwaist style with three to five bedrooms. Tudors, Dutch Colonials and smaller bungalows can also be found. Most homes here were built with stone foundations between 1900 and 1920 and feature stunning architectural details, including 9-foot ceilings and oak pocket doors.
Home prices range from $125,000 to $350,000.

Gillham Park and Anita B. Goreman Center favorite green spaces
The neighborhood has a small pocket park called Manheim Green Park at the top of the neighborhood, which has a playground. But most residents go to Gillham Park along Gillham Road or the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center when they want a larger green space to spread out.
The Gorman Center's outdoor space spans 8 acres with native plants and paved trails that pass through prairie, woodland, forest and wetland habitats. Visitors can also enjoy free indoor nature exhibits and programs.

Residents work closely with police to curb crime
Manheim Park receives an overall CAP Index crime score of 5, compared to the U.S. average of 4. Violent crimes score a 7.
"It's not totally crime-free, but it's much safer now than it was 6-8 years ago. And it keeps getting safer and safer, with good police representation and response time. It's not a war zone, but I wouldn't need to leave the lawn mower out when you go inside to get a glass of water," Krull says.
Troost Festival brings neighbors and businesses together for fall fun each October
Neighborhood special events mark the seasons with color and festivity. Residents and visitors enjoy food and community booths at the Troost Avenue Festival in October. Within Manheim Park, neighbors come together twice yearly for big block parties with potluck dinners. During Harvest Fest in October, they plant sweet potatoes and peanuts; they celebrate their Spring Fling in May.
