On Worlds of Fun’s opening day in 1973, the Maple Park water tower was painted to resemble the amusement park’s hot air balloon logo. Today, many houses in this Kansas City neighborhood boast a clear view of the multi-colored Missouri landmark, reminding you of the 64 rollercoasters and rides located only about a mile away. While the presence of a huge theme park undoubtedly serves as Maple Park's dominant feature, there is more to discover in the nooks and crannies of this neighborhood, including some great potential deals on real estate.

Maple Park is “the one area where you can get a 4,000-square-foot home for a good price,” Keller Williams Realtor and team leader Ron Henderson says. The median home price in Maple Park is $150,000, below the state average of $200,000. Huddled beneath the 2.8-million-gallon water tower are ranch-style houses – some single-story while others are raised – with garages underneath. You may also see an occasional classical-style home or a Craftsman with a side-gabled roof. Houses here often have brick facades, windows with shutters and backyards heavily forested with those namesake maple trees.

Children in the area attend the newly remodeled Maplewood Elementary School. Updates to the building include an outdoor courtyard, collaborative learning areas and large windows that provide ample natural light. When students aren’t learning in their contemporary-style classrooms, they can join the running or chess club.

Once school is out, children in Maple Park can spend their summer at Worlds of Fun. Whether you want to dangle upside down from the Patriot or rapidly drop down the Mamba, there is a roller coaster for every type of thrill-seeker. Younger kids can also enjoy calmer rides and meet their favorite characters from the Peanuts Gang at Planet Snoopy. Be sure to pack your swimsuit because when you buy a ticket to Worlds of Fun, you can also go to Oceans of Fun. You can ride the waves at the Surf City Wave Pool or glide down the 65-foot-tall Predator’s Plunge water slide. The amusement park is also known for its Halloween Haunt. Every September through October, the carnival décor is swapped out for a ghoulish aesthetic, adding monsters and haunted houses to the existing scares at Worlds of Fun.

If rollercoasters aren’t your thing, the 177-acre Searcy Creek Greenway also weaves throughout the neighborhood. While the park includes a short, paved walking trail and a new playground, most of it is empty green space. However, the Searcy Creek Greenway Masterplan hopes to expand the existing playground and add a fruit tree orchard, an outdoor classroom and a butterfly garden to the expansive area. The greenway is also connected to nearby Hidden Valley Park. Just 2 miles away, you can bring your frisbee to the 9-hole flying disc course, admire the native plants in the rain garden or go for a run around the nature trail.

If you need to prepare for your day of riding rollercoasters, you can grab snacks and sunscreen at the nearby Sun Fresh or Walmart Neighborhood Market. For a hearty breakfast, sure to give you enough fuel to walk around the 236-acre park, head to Ma & Pa’s Kettle Restaurant. With walls covered in local sports memorabilia and homestyle classics, like biscuits with sausage gravy, you will leave feeling both nostalgic and full.

If your day at Worlds of Fun hasn’t tired you out, Maple Park is only 11 miles away from additional adventures in Downtown Kansas City.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
