Mount Cleveland is a self-sufficient, modest community that is inching intentionally toward brighter days. “There’s a bank. There’s a health center. There’s a community center for kids. And there’s room for growth,” says Lichelle Leapheart, a Realtor with United Real Estate Kansas City, who works primarily with investors. “My mechanic lives in that neighborhood. This neighborhood is convenient: You have a post office. You have a grocery store. If you lived here, you would have minimal transit to worry with and most things in walkable distance.”

Homes
Investors have been drawn to the area for its low-cost homes. “There’s potential for people to be able to purchase way lower than the average house in Kansas City. It has slow growth, but it’s growing steadily. So, it’s an area I see a lot of investors interested in,” Leapheart says. “There are good starter homes in that neighborhood." Homes are primarily modest ranch-style homes with basements and split ranch-style homes. A sizeable portion of the community consists of commercial space, which backs up to the neighborhood's southern exposure. “There are lots of slab houses, nothing too big," Leapheart says. "Any large houses you see would be someone who just decided to overbuild.” The median home price here is $111,000, with houses selling from as low as around $40,000 to around $150,000.
Schools
Students attend Benjamin Banneker Elementary School and Central Middle School, with Niche ratings that show room for growth. They also may attend Southeast High School, which Niche rates C-minus.
Parks
Although there is no park in Mount Cleveland proper, the community is right by one of the city's premier open areas. In a city well known for its fountains, the spectacular Spirit of Freedom fountain is a cut above and offers visitors a wide area to walk and reflect. “The fountain is one that people like. There’s a lot of green space right, and there’s Brush Creek and a baseball field nearby,” Leapheart says. The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium is less than 4 miles away. Mount Cleveland is home to the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center and Museum, which has art exhibits and events. There’s also a Boy’s and Girls Club where children can get involved in activities and attend events.
Shopping and Dining
Dining opportunities are modest, with fast-food chains capturing the most attention. But there is no shortage of eating spots not far away. Barbecue restaurants are always nearby in Kansas City. LC Barbecue is about 1 mile away. “I get Burnt End sandwich and their baked beans,” Leapheart says. For groceries, Blue Parkway Sun Fresh is the closest in-neighborhood option. As for retail shopping, Country Club Plaza is 4 mile away.
Transportation
A city bus line takes you right there as well as most other places. And with numerous highways and bike lanes around, nearly every place you want to be, you can get from here.
