North Town Fork Creek Greenway home to trail, park, historic sites
The 75-acre greenway includes a trail that leads to whimsical wooden bridges stretching over the park's waterway.
"It's beautiful. It's an unexpected oasis in the middle of the neighborhood, tucked in amidst the houses in the area. A linear park meanders through the neighborhood," says Heidi Markle, director of Kansas City Parks Marketing and Events.
The Satchel Paige Memorial Stadium at the top of the greenway will be filled with fans of The Hormigas, Kansas City's Pecos League baseball team, beginning in 2025. Named for the former Kansas City Monarchs pitcher and hall of famer, the stadium is part of the Cultural Mall, which honors the city's African-American history. The Mall also features The Spirit of Freedom Fountain, the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center and the Town Fork Creek Urban Garden, which grows flowers and organic vegetables and herbs.
The North Town Fork Creek Park features basketball courts, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and an elaborate rope playground. Areas beside the Town Fork Creek Greenway, as well as the northern part of the neighborhood along Brush Creek, are at increased risk of flooding.
The Mary Williams-Neal Community Center on Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard steps away from the neighborhood boundary on Cleveland Avenue, offers a sweet reprieve from the summer heat with an outdoor pool and cooling centers. In frigid temperatures, the center provides warming spaces. Activities are free for those aged 17 and under. Some programs and classes for adults and seniors require a small fee.
The Town Fork Greenway boasts pristine trails that lead you through tree shaded areas.
