You might be able to guess from its name, but in Oak Park Northwest, you’re always near outdoor entertainment. But it's not just the area's namesake park that lies close by, because that's just one of five parks within half a mile of this eastside neighborhood. Pair that with Downtown Kansas City lying only a 10-minute drive away, and you’ll find one of the biggest convenience points in the entire metro area.

That convenience ties into the home prices, too. Most sit around or below the city average – anywhere from $150,000 to $225,000 – which is rare for an area this close to downtown. Oak Park Northwest overflows with 1910s and ’20s American Foursquares, known for their wide and covered front porches. Some homes here sport rarer amenities like balconies and long driveways leading into detached multicar garages, too. These densely packed streets, though, don’t allow for much yard space, but that also means less maintenance is needed outside the house. “As of the first half of 2023, the average days on the market for homes here is 33,” says Marline Brown, Realtor for Murrell Homes.

The handful of parks surrounding the neighborhood makes up for the lack of yardage, however. The closest, Central Park, hangs just off the northeastern corner, spanning almost 12 acres and offering hard tennis courts next to a playset with a cherry-red climbing structure. The biggest, though, is just a half-mile southeast, with Cleveland Park stretching across 29 acres and boasting everything from a baseball field – complete with bleachers – to a paved walking path. Its raspberry-red-and-sky-blue playset with tan slides is popular, too. Those options too crowded? Try Seven Oaks for a seasonal splash pad, Ivanhoe for a picnic shelter or gobs of green space and Oak for four basketball hoops, including one fully fenced court.

Central Park is also a frequented after-school spot since it’s adjacent to Central middle and high schools and also houses the latter’s football field. Central High gives students the option to enroll in the Early College Academy in which they can earn college credits – up to the first two years, fully paid by Kansas City Public Schools – and graduate high school with an associate degree. Students start their academic journey at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, just across Highway 71 with a big emphasis on literacy.

You can stay right in Oak Park Northwest for any meal of the day, though, with its only restaurant, Brotha’s Grill, open for all of them. Kick off your day with a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, or close it out with a wide range of classic American cuisine, from Philly cheesesteaks to chicken and waffles, and wash it all down with a vanilla milkshake. Swing by on Wednesdays to cash in on its 50-cent wing special or whenever you need a made-fresh meal fast.

If you’d prefer to make your own dinner, you can pick up ingredients from Aldi along Prospect Avenue or stop by Sun Fresh off the neighborhood’s northwestern corner, which also holds a small shopping strip with popular retail therapy options like Citi Trends, as well as a Walgreens and chain restaurants like Pizza Hut.

Entertainment and athletic options converge in uber-convenient Oak Park Northwest.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
