The Oak Grove neighborhood has a picturesque landscape.
A caring community near downtown Kansas City
Part of the greater Oak Park area, Oak Park Southeast is an eastside Kansas City neighborhood where community comes first. “It is a very diverse neighborhood, and when I say diverse, I don’t just mean a couple here—it’s very diverse,” says Donald Givens, pastor of Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Oak Park. Givens gets to know locals from all walks of life through the church’s full roster of programming, which includes clothing giveaways and a soup kitchen. Local organizations like Mount Vernon rise to meet community challenges such as crime, a top concern for many residents. The area has a high density of service-oriented houses of worship, as well as an active neighborhood association. “We always come together — even those that are not involved in the church — when things happen in our community.”
People living in Oak Park Southeast have access to several green spaces, playgrounds and athletic amenities which infuse this urban neighborhood with some of the perks of suburban living. Public transit and nearby Highway 71 deliver residents to downtown Kansas City just 5 miles away.

Updated equipment at Oak Park's namesake
Cleveland Park totals nearly 30 acres and was once the site of veterans’ housing built at the end of WWII. Baseball leagues play on the park’s four lit baseball diamonds. The neighborhood’s namesake, Oak Park, is just a few blocks from many neighborhood homes, offering its own baseball field, as well as basketball courts and an updated playground. Locals can go for a swim or host a birthday party at the Mary Williams-Neal Community Center, recently renamed from the Brush Creek Community Center. The center also hosts senior fitness classes, game nights and summer camps. “It’s a place where they can go get fit and find information about jobs and local events,” says Ramone Thompson, the center’s senior recreation director. “It’s a place where you can be active socially or physically.”
Playing through the evening at Hoops at Night
In 2013, longtime community member and activist Pat Clarke started Hoops at Night, a summer basketball league and championship at Oak Park. The program engages young people in not only exercise, but relationship-building and play.

Jamaican fare and music in the neighborhood
Sankofa Cafe is a beloved neighborhood staple serving oxtail and other Jamaican favorites. The bar and restaurant is always filled with music, sometimes hosting live Reggae acts. “The food is fantastic,” says Marline Brown, area resident and Realtor with Murrell Homes. “I can definitely vouch for it.” The closest grocery store is the Aldi on Prospect Avenue, though locals pick up seafood and chicken wings at Murdock’s Fresh Fish and Seafood. Courting new businesses to the neighborhood is a local priority, according to Givens, who says has seen several commercial entities pop up on Prospect in recent years. Across the creek, The Shops on Blue Parkway host a few retailers and a Sun Fresh grocer.
Diverse programming at Kansas City schools
Children begin school at Martin Luther King Elementary, which has a C-minus from Niche. Central Middle offers clubs in cooking, debate, chess and more, and gets a D-plus from Niche. Students can earn an associate degree while still in high school at Central High, a C-minus-rated school.
