Larger lot sizes in South Kansas City

Oakwood has room to spread out in South Kansas City. Once an intersection of the Oregon, Santa Fe and California Trails, Oakwood is now better known for its relative affordability and suburban amenities. Schools and shopping centers are easily accessible, and nearby highways quickly connect residents with the rest of the city. Still, the neighborhood’s Blue River Parkway Trails offer a glimpse into the natural environment of the homesteader era. Lots here tend to be roomy, with sprawling, tree-studded lawns, though homes are still close enough to foster a neighborly environment. “The neighbors are all very friendly,” says Kimberly Killian, a Broker with Realty Platinum Professionals with more than 25 years of experience. “People who buy there tend to stay in the neighborhood.”

Relative affordability for Oakwood homes

In Oakwood, buyers can still find homes beneath the Kansas City median price, with most options ranging between $140,000 and $350,000. Homes here were built between the 1940s and the 1980s and feature minimal traditionals, ranch-style homes and split-levels. Price tends to ascend with lot size, as some homes closer to Scott Park can accompany up to 10 acres. “It’s such a good price point for so many people,” Killian says. “Most of the houses in the neighborhood are built on good-sized lots, and people take really good care of their properties.”

Scott Park within the neighborhood features a paved walking path encircling a small lake and ample open green space. Kids can join a league with the 3&2 Baseball Club, which plays on a complex of fields on Blue River Road. Just west of Oakwood’s homes, Blue River Parkway Trails bend through dense forest, leading to more than 12 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails in the area. Adventurous hikers can even start their journey in Oakwood and traverse along Indian Creek to reach the state line. Those who prefer a day on the golf course can join Oakwood Country Club within the neighborhood. The club also offers an Olympic-sized pool, pickleball and tennis courts, a restaurant and access to a lake for fishing and boating. Anyone can join today, though the club started as a social center for Jewish families in 1881.
