Palestine West & Oak Park Northeast may be partially named after one park, but it’s better known for another. Bookended to the north by Central Park, this eastside Kansas City neighborhood is also home to Central Middle and High schools, so it covers the bases for education and outdoor recreation alike. Besides the schools, this neighborhood is entirely residential, save for a few churches. These streets brim with 1920s properties, namely Craftsman homes resting on small lots with covered front porches, long driveways allowing for off-street parking and wide back decks overlooking open yards. American Foursquares can be found here now and then, too, typically with one-car garages, covered front porches and partially fenced, woodsy yards. Asking prices run from $150,000 to $225,000. “There are a lot of remodeled homes that have great bones,” says Marline Brown, Realtor for Murrell Homes. “This also tends to be a targeted area where lenders are working with outside programs to assist homeowners with obtaining homes.”

A chunk of the desirability factor here is its unparalleled proximity to the schools. Central Middle offers attendance incentives and unique extracurriculars like Sewing Club, while Central High gives students the option to enroll in the Early College Academy in which they can earn college credits and graduate high school with an associate degree. Students start their academy journey, though, at Melcher Elementary, just 1.5 miles southeast and focusing on physical, intellectual and emotional development. All three schools offer free breakfast and lunch for every student.

When the bell rings, most students flock just outside to Central Park, spanning nearly 12 acres. Though most around the city know it as the home of Central High’s football stadium, kids here adore it for its playground with a cherry-red climbing structure and hard tennis courts. Need more options or less of a crowd? Seven Oaks Park awaits less than a mile east with everything from a seasonal splash pad to two basketball courts and a baseball diamond. Its playset is even bigger, too, offering blue slides, tire and traditional swings, and a spinning play tower. The same distance but directly south, Cleveland Park stretches across 29 acres and has four baseball fields – complete with bleachers and concessions – alongside raspberry-red-and-sky-blue play equipment.

Though Palestine West & Oak Park Northeast doesn’t have any restaurants of its own, you don’t have to trek far after working up an appetite. Just a straight shot 1 mile north, KC Cajun offers a taste of the bayou right in Missouri. Explore the flavors of the south with its specialty po’boy – served on French bread with shrimp, lettuce, tomato and gator sauce – or dive into a plate of Cajun alfredo. Its extensive menu also offers everything from gumbo to chicken tenders, so even picky eaters can find something to love. Not to mention, KC Cajun’s food truck was voted the best Cajun food provider by The Pitch, so come try this award-winning fare for yourself.

More dining options like J’s Fish and Chicken sit along neighboring Santa Fe’s western edge, including Sun Fresh Market for preparing your own meals. This strip also boasts retail therapy stops like Citi Trends and a Walgreens, so you knock out a range of shopping needs in one trip.

Known for its schools and underrated for its proximity to entertainment, Palestine West & Oak Park Northeast is truly a hidden gem eager to be explored.
