South K.C. neighborhood has Santa Fe Trail roots

A 100-foot-long red bridge crossing the Blue River is the namesake and local landmark distinguishing Red Bridge North. The quiet, 1970s-era suburban neighborhood in south Kansas City is 16 miles south of downtown Kansas City. Residents are just as likely to travel half that distance to Overland Park, the Country Club Plaza or Grandview for shopping, dining and entertainment. Red Bridge North is going through a transition, says Charles Gilbert, a Realtor with Sellstate Heartland Realty who's been selling homes in the area for nine years. "New families are moving in. They are starting to have turnover. It used to be families who stayed here for a long time," Gilbert says.

Ranch-style homes with a mid-century modern vibe

Mid-century homes here are generally one story with front or side-loaded garages and roomy driveways. Mature trees line the streets, which include some sidewalks. Ranch-style and split-level homes come in styles that include French Country, Tudors, and traditional. "They're great starter homes. It's one of the few places where you can get affordable housing that's under $300,000," Gilbert says. Home prices range from $275,000 to $500,000. However, most sell for between $275,000 and $350,000. A 3-bedroom townhouse in new developments such as Red Bridge Greens Villas can sell for $470,000.

Private school options include Notre Dame de Sion High School, which Niche names Missouri's No. 1 Catholic high school and best all-girls school. Niche names boys-only Rockhurst High School, the No. 4 top Catholic high school in Missouri and the No. 2 best Catholic high school in the Kansas City area. Natural beauty at Minor Park, Alex George Lake and Blue River

Minor Park is a sprawling green space adjacent to the neighborhood south of Red Bridge Road. The park's 235 acres include wandering trails, a dozen tennis courts and a public 18-hole golf course. Two miles to the east, Alex George Lake and Wetland Park offer a serene natural setting from which hikers can cross the Blue River and trek north and south along the Blue River Trail. Improved Red Bridge Shopping Center within walking distance

The Red Bridge Shopping Center is undergoing a facelift. Several new businesses have opened, including Berries + Honey Charcuterie and The Limit Pub & Grub. They join existing neighborhood favorites such as Crows Coffee and Tanners Bar & Grill. Parking and lighting improvements are underway in the shopping center, and in the summer of 2024, the Red Bridge Farm Fresh Market will open its doors. In late 2019, the shopping center became the new home of the Red Bridge branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library. "We have all kinds of great amenities like story time, book groups meeting rooms and laptops you can use at different tables," says Carrie Torrence, the branch's Early Literacy Specialist. While at the shopping center, kids can also check out the Regnier Family Wonderscope Children's Museum of Kansas City. There's a Price Chopper 3 miles away on West 103rd Street for groceries. That area is home to many other shops and restaurants, including Jasper's, which has spoiled Kansas Citians with Italian cuisine since 1954.

Trick or Treaters can count on a big haul at Red Bridge Shopping Center

Neighborhood kids get decked out and descend upon the Red Bridge Shopping Center during the annual Trick or Treat Event. In wintertime, they meet at Wonderscope for the Winterland Workshop. The event's proceeds benefit South K.C. families in need.

South and east areas more prone to flooding

Residents should know that the south part of the neighborhood along East 109th Terrace and East 104th Street, adjacent to the Blue River, is more prone to flooding. Also, the traffic along Interstate 435, Red Bridge Road and Holmes Road can make those areas noisier.
