Early 20th-century charm in urban neighborhood where folks still hang out on front porches

Established in 1886, Scarritt Renaissance is one of Kansas City's oldest neighborhoods. Potential buyers will find streets filled with grand mansions built in the late 19th century. The neighborhood also includes some smaller homes built for working-class residents. Named for a Methodist minister and successful farmer, Rev. Nathan Scarritt, Scarritt Renaissance began as a neighborhood for Kansas City elites. "It's deeply rooted in Kansas City's history, enriched by the contributions of influential residents and a vibrant community spirit," Jacob Luke, president of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association, says. Kessler Park and Concourse Park provide hundreds of acres of green space combined with historic landmarks. "It's nestled in the historic northeast collective, which I love because everybody there has a front porch. It creates a different kind of community because everybody's just kind of out there living life on the front porch. It's one of my favorite neighborhoods in Kansas City. Besides the historic architecture, it has all this green space and is still very affordable. It's beautiful with a real old-world charm," Nick Pickrell, a Realtor with Local Agent, LLC, says.

Historic architecture, from Craftsman-style bungalows to stately mansions

Turn-of-the-century homes, initially built for civic leaders, feature styles including Queen Anne, American Foursquare, Beaux Arts and Tudor. Smaller, Craftsman-style bungalows can also be found among the larger homes. "You've got kind of a bit of it all. It's one of the neighborhoods where every house looks completely different," Pickrell says. Home prices range from $76,000 for a modest bungalow to $579,000 for a 5-bedroom American Foursquare. A restored 1890s mansion or a mansion converted to multi-family housing can cost between $600,000 and $785,000. "You can buy a truly beautiful and one-of-a-kind house here. And it's not just massive mansions; there are some smaller, more cost-effective options as well," says Ron Henderson, a team leader and Realtor with Keller Williams.

Concourse Park and Kessler Park feature landmarks, great views and sprawling green space

At the heart of the neighborhood, Concourse Park is home to the Beaux-Art-style Colonnade and J.F.K. Memorial. The grounds also feature playgrounds, basketball courts, workout stations, a 30-foot hillside slide and a fountain with water jets. "Kids play in the spray area all summer long. The fountains come out of the ground at varying rates, and kids look around, and it'll come at 'em! The slide is built into the earth. It's a really big, wide slide; it's really fun," Pickrell says. The park is also popular for community gatherings and offers panoramic views of the city's East Bottoms neighborhood and the Missouri River. The Kansas City Museum is also located at Concourse Park. A 4-story, 70-room former estate of lumber baron Robert A. Long is now filled with cultural exhibits, a billiards room, a speakeasy, and a vintage soda fountain named Elixir. Kessler Park is home to the scenic Cliff Drive. This paved trail hugs limestone bluffs between the east bottoms industrial area and Scarritt Renaissance mansions. It's the only state-designated scenic byway in the U.S. located in an urban area. The drive is closed to traffic, making it a peaceful spot for hikers, rock climbers, cyclists and skateboarders. The park includes a disc golf course, North Terrace Lake, a stunning 35-foot waterfall, and the Kansas City Museum. "You can also get a great view of the K.C. Current professional women's soccer stadium from up on these bluffs," Pickrell says.

Restaurants line Independence Avenue

Independence Avenue is packed with cafes and restaurants, including local favorites Eleos Coffee House and Elvira's Cakes, which specializes in Mexican food and bakery items. San Antonio Market serves as a restaurant and market. Cosentino's Price Chopper and Aldi are the closest grocery stores.

“Scare-It” Halloween event attracts 8,000 visitors

Since 1992, The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association has organized the community's most popular event: Scare-It Halloween, a play on the neighborhood’s name. The city shuts down eight blocks to accommodate 8,000 people from across the city to collect candy safely. Food trucks line the streets and live music plays as kids trick or treat at ghoulishly decorated houses.

Within 3 miles to the east, it leads to Interstate 435, which can take drivers anywhere in the metro area. Several RideKC bus stops are available throughout Independence Avenue.
