A multicultural neighborhood close to downtown Kansas City
Sheffield is a dynamic blend of history, industry and community in northeast Kansas City. People here live in 19th- and early 20th-century homes and organize for the betterment of their neighborhood. Though warehouses surround Sheffield, homes sit within a high density of trees, and the 11-acre Sheffield Park is a short walk for many residents. This is a diverse place to live: the neighborhood’s houses of worship include a Vietnamese Baptist church, a Catholic parish, Spanish-language congregations and a Baha’i Faith Center. Local restaurants, grocers, nonprofits and city resources directly cater to Sheffield’s multicultural community.
Renovating Sheffield's historic homes
Sheffield is tightly packed with historic homes primed for renovation. “More homes are being revitalized and offered for sale,” says Mackaylee Beach, a real estate agent with USREEB Realty Pros who has sold in Sheffield. The nature of the market is attractive to investors looking to rent, though Beach says she sees interest from families and first-time buyers, too. “It’s a diverse, welcoming neighborhood.” Homes here can date back as far as the 1890s, and most were built between 1900 and 1920. The grid-like streets of Sheffield host a preponderance of two-bedroom bungalows, though buyers can also find ranch-style homes and Foursquares. Age and small home sizes contribute to Sheffield’s position as one of the most affordable places to purchase property in Kansas City. Prices range between $30,000 for a fixer-upper up to $135,000 for a fully renovated build.
Sledding at Sheffield Park
Sheffield Park’s open secret is its steep and beloved sledding hill, which draws people from across the city after a snowfall. In warmer months, residents can picnic in the grass on top of the knoll overlooking the surrounding industrial landscape. The park is also home to a playground, soccer field and baseball diamonds, and is close to a small orchard of trees planted and maintained by the Sheffield Neighborhood Association.
Locals benefit from broad programming at the Kansas City Public Library North-East Branch on Wilson Avenue. “The North-East Branch has a diverse, multilingual staff that is committed to exceptional service,” says Kim Gile, branch services and engagement director for Kansas City Public Library. “We are especially excited about our Tony Temple Fitness Summer Camp where kids can explore mindfulness exercises inspired by animal movements.”
Festival Dia del Niño welcomes neighbors of all ages
Sheffield residents are highly involved in their community, gathering at neighborhood association meetings, volunteering for local nonprofits and organizing through their houses of worship. Each year, Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church hosts Festival Dia del Niño, or Children’s Day, a community celebration commemorating the Mexican holiday in April. The event welcomes all community members to enjoy live music, Mexican food and family activities.
Mexican food on Winner Road and Independence Avenue
The neighborhood has a high density of Mexican restaurants and markets around the intersection of Winner Road and Independence Avenue. Carniceria El Torito III is a consistently busy small grocer with a meat counter, fresh-made tortillas and a diversity of Mexican products. The business also operates Taqueria El Torito next door for ready-made enchiladas, tacos and other meals. Aldi is the closest large-scale grocery store, conveniently located within the neighborhood on Winner Road.
Downtown Kansas City is 4 miles away
The neighborhood sits close to Interstate 435 and Independence Avenue, a major throughway. Downtown Kansas City is just 4 miles away, which residents can reach on a Ride KC bus routes 9, 12 or 24.
Parents of KC students can take classes at East High
Students can start at Trailwoods Elementary a mile south of the neighborhood, then continue to Northeast Middle. Both schools have a C-minus from Niche. Teens graduate from East High School, which also has a C-minus. East High has a partnership program with the Mexican consulate in Kansas City called Plaza Comunitaria, which offers free adult classes to Mexican emigrants and parents of students enrolled in Kansas City Public Schools.
Sheffield organizations show up for the community
Sheffield organizations offer wide-ranging services to meet the unique needs of this diverse community. The North-East Branch library has a Refugee and Immigrant Services and Empowerment department “that helps people practice English to obtain things like a driver’s license and even U.S. citizenship,” Gile says. Sheffield Place offers trauma-informed care while operating 10 housing units within the neighborhood for mothers and children experiencing homelessness. Children’s programming and services are available at several local institutions, including Whatsoever Community Center and the faith-based Sheffield Family Life Center.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
