Preserving history in midtown Kansas City

Squier Park is a midtown Kansas City neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here, flags touting Historic Squier Park adorn the streetlights lining wide, landscaped streets. Development here dates back to the 1880s, when the neighborhood hosted the elite professionals of Kansas City. Today, Squier Park attracts anyone looking for historic charm close to Country Club Plaza, Westport and other midtown highlights. “The houses are older, but younger people moving in and restoring them has brought new life to the area,” says ReeceNichols Realtor Kevin Sieker, a longtime Kansas City resident.

Renovated homes and brand new construction

Homeowners here take great care in preserving and updating their historic homes. Styles vary widely, encompassing Tudor-inspired homes, Prairie builds and Queen Annes. Squier Park also has a handful of newly constructed American Foursquares near Armour Boulevard. Three-bedroom homes typically start around $300,000, above the city-wide median price, and can climb above $400,000 for four or five bedrooms. New construction is popping up on previously razed properties, which range between $400,000 and $700,000.

Residents can pick up tennis or pickleball on site, or at the adjoining Gillham Park. The Manheim Green Playground is also mere steps from many homes.

Local dining within and just beyond the neighborhood

Locals can walk to a handful of coffee shops and restaurants along Troost Avenue and 35th Street, including Urban Café, a popular weekend brunch stop with spins on regional favorites and vegan options. In 2023, Community Groceries opened in Squier Park to expand access to quality food in the area. The grocery store sources many goods locally and prioritizes affordability. A significant draw for Squier Park buyers is its proximity to places like Country Club Plaza. “Squier Park is more of a quiet, residential area, but it’s close to every downtown Kansas City amenity,” Sieker says. The Plaza hosts 15 blocks of premier shopping and dining less than 3 miles from the neighborhood.

Neighbors tend to a community garden

The Squier Park Neighborhood Association maintains a community garden at 38th Street and Virginia Avenue. Locals use the garden to grow herbs, fresh produce and flowers, the results of which are celebrated at the Harvest Festival each fall. Neighbors also convene at several surrounding houses of worship, which include Lutheran, Catholic and Presbyterian churches, as well as an Islamic Center. Several of them occupy historic buildings.
