Residents share the neighborhood with zoo pals, sports enthusiasts and nature lovers
Although it's well known as one of the largest parks in the U.S. and home to some of Kansas City's most popular amenities, many people don't realize that Swope Park is also a residential area. Granted, some of the neighbors are sea turtles, orangutans and elephants. However, many humans also live in homes between the eastern part of the park and Interstate 435.
"It's a relatively sleepy neighborhood. You can have all the green space you want. If you like a lot of green space, the zoo, or the outdoors, you will like this neighborhood. You get a lot of beautiful land around here with many woods and undeveloped areas," Nick Pickrell says.
Pickrell, a Realtor with KW, has been selling homes in the area for four years.
Swope Park is the largest urban park in the Kansas City area and the 51st largest in the U.S. Sprawling over 1,800 acres, Swope Park is home to some of K.C.'s most popular amenities, including the Starlight Theater, the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium and Swope Memorial Golf Course.
Interstate 435 just 2 miles away
Swope Park is about two miles east of U.S. Highway 71, which provides a straight shot north into downtown Kansas City. Two miles to the east, Interstate 435 takes drivers anywhere in the K.C. metro area.
Residents can also use public transportation with numerous RideKC stops along E. 63rd Street, E. 67th Street, Winchester Ave., and Swope Parkway. Bike lanes are also available along Swope Parkway.
Homes offer variety in pricing and architectural style
Homes in the residential section feature a variety of styles and sizes.
"You're going to get a diverse mixture of older homes anywhere from a dilapidated situation to something that's been renovated and reasonably priced," Paul Galbrecht says.
K.C. native Galbrecht, a Realtor with KW, has been selling homes in the area for five years.
Ranch-style homes are the most common, but the neighborhood also features traditional, Tudor, split-level and Cape Cod styles. Prices range from $130,000 for a small ranch to $350,000 for a 2-story traditional home.
Galbrecht says buyers are often surprised to learn about financing options designed to encourage renters to become owners.
"I've been in countless situations where people say, 'I have no money, I only have a couple of thousand dollars.' I'm like, 'I got you,' and I found them in a house with nothing down," he says.
Some banks offer grants and down payment assistance to qualifying buyers.
Local BBQ favorites like LC's and Big T's within 3 miles
Swope Park residents live close to some of Kansas City's favorite locally-owned eateries. LC's Bar-B-Q and Big T's Bar-B-Q are just 3 miles away. Just Chicken N Beer is right at the southern tip of the neighborhood for nighttime drinks and dinner.
Price Chopper and Hy-Vee are within 3 miles, making for convenient grocery shopping.
Swope Park's 1,800 acres feature major amenities
Swope Park includes fishing and sporting areas, two golf courses and many miles of scenic hiking trails in the Lake of the Woods. The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium features thousands of animals and sea creatures from all over the world and fun attractions such as the Go Ape zipline. Since 1950, Kansas Citians have enjoyed performances under the stars at Starlight Theater. Injured woodland creatures, including owls, bald eagles and hawks get a second chance at a healthy life at the Lakeside Nature Center rehabilitation facility.
But despite all of Swope Park's impressive man-made amenities, the Blue River, which runs through the neighborhood, is one of its most striking features.
"The Blue River is legit very beautiful," Pickrell says.
Southeast High School features African-Centered College Prep program
Children may attend Banneker Elementary School, Central Middle School and Southeast High School. Students in the neighborhood attend B. Banneker Elementary School and Central Middle School, both receiving a D-plus grade from Niche. High schoolers can attend Southeast High School, which gets a C-minus from Niche. Southeast High includes an African-Centered College Prep program to which Kansas City Public School District students may apply. This program features a rigorous college prep curriculum emphasizing self-esteem, empowerment and responsible citizenship.
Ethnic Enrichment Festival celebrates 45th anniversary in 2024
Many of Kansas City's favorite annual events take place in Swope Park. For nearly half a century, the Ethnic Enrichment Commission of Kansas City has hosted the Ethnic Enrichment Festival in August. One of the top such festivals in the U.S., this event features music and food from all over the world. In the fall, festive, colorful lanterns fill the autumn air above the zoo at the GloWild Lantern Festival.
