Historic midtown Kansas City neighborhood
Tucked between major thoroughfares Broadway and Southwest Trafficway, Valentine is a long, narrow, walkable neighborhood in midtown Kansas City that has a century’s worth of history. The neighborhood’s origins start with the country’s migration west. Penn Valley Park, which is just north of 31st Street, was a stopping place along the Sante Fe Trail. Today, Valentine offers 100-plus-year-old homes, proximity to a historic deli, Browne Irish Marketplace, and is a mile away from Union Station. “We’ve seen an exodus to the suburbs in years past, but people are coming back,” says Kerry Browne, the fourth-generation owner of Browne’s Irish Marketplace. “People are attracted by all the things to do nearby. It’s such an exciting time to live here.”
Large, early 1900s-era homes with ample porches inspire neighborly friendliness
Tight city streets slope through Valentine and are lined with well-maintained sidewalks shaded by old-growth streets. “Valentine has beautiful houses. Some may still need a little love, but it appeals to those who like an urban lifestyle. It feels like city living,” Laura Miller, a Realtor with ReeceNichols says. The neighborhood has around 150 homes that a predominantly Kansas City shirtwaist style – a blend between American Foursquare and Craftsman styles. These homes are known for their elegant front porches and sit on manicured rectangular lots. Prices range from $265,000 to about $960,000, but it’s common to see homes valued between $400,000 and $500,000. “It’s one of the nicer parts of midtown,” Cody Snowberg, who works reception at the Uptown Theater, says.
In late 2024, the Kansas City Life Insurance Company razed about two dozen homes it owns, with no announced plans for how that land will be developed.
“Valentine has always undergone change. We’ve been here since 1901, so we’ve seen a lot of changes in that time. Things always come up, but we all work together. A lot of stuff is changing, and I hope that it will be for the good. We have such a strong neighborhood association,” Browne says.

Browne’s Irish Market has been open for more than 100 years
Browne’s Irish Marketplace at the corner of 33rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue embodies Valentine's lively and enduring spirit. Inside, tightly packed shelves are filled with imported Irish teas, jams and Celtic dishes fill the front room, while back rooms are filled with chunky Irish sweaters, hats and other imports. Neighbors brave sub-freezing temperatures to gather for the holiday sip and shop where folks clap in time to Irish tunes, enjoying sandwiches between sips of imported whiskey and wine. For more brand-name grocers, there is a Family Dollar and a Happy Food Center in the neighborhood.
Valentine has a vibrant restaurant scene along Broadway, including Hamburger Mary’s, an LGBT-friendly restaurant and bar with entertainment, including drag shows. Pho Tower serves Vietnamese cuisine. In a city known for its barbeque Q39 is a popular option on 39th Street.

K.C.’s renowned St. Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off in Valentine
Kansas City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which attracts around 300,000 visitors, starts in Valentine, along Broadway from 33rd Street to Westport. Browne says every year she hears people from other parts of town remark that they’d had no idea that midtown was such a thriving spot until they’d participated in the parade, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024.
Dating to the 1920s, Uptown Theater has been bringing visitors to Valentine since its opening. Added to the National List of Historic Places in 1979, the venue still has concerts, plays and comedy multiple nights a year.
Kansas City Public Schools offers application-based charter schools
Students can attend Primitivo Garcia Elementary School and Central Middle School, both of which earn a C-minus on Niche. Central High School earns a C grade. The district offers numerous application-based signature and charter schools. Some options include the Foreign Language Academy (FLA), or charter schools, such as the French immersion school, the Academie Lafayette or Gordon Parks Elementary School. Private options include the nearby Cristo Rey, a Catholic school, east of the neighborhood.
Sprawling Penn Valley Park offers majestic views of downtown K.C.
Valentine is close to a large green space and a community center. The 176-acre Penn Valley Park north of 31st Street, offers panoramic views of downtown and features a skate park, tennis courts and an off-leash dog park.
The heavily wooded, hilly Roanoke Park features a rope playground and limestone outcroppings. Next door, the Westport-Roanoke Community Center offers indoor and outdoor activities, including an indoor gym, basketball court and children’s summer camp.

Valentine is a small neighborhood with much to do.
Broadway Boulevard, Southwest Trafficway offer access to downtown and Westport
Valentine is bounded by major thoroughfares, including Southwest Trafficway, which takes drivers downtown. Broadway Boulevard connects to Westport and points south. West 39th Street provides direct access across the state line to the University of Kansas Medical Center, a mile away. “In 5 minutes, you can be downtown, at a restaurant on Southwest Boulevard or at the University of Kansas Medical Center,” Miller says.
Bus service is available with several stops along Broadway and Southwest Trafficway. However, Snowberg says that using public transportation can be frustrating. “The service is inconsistent. Buses can arrive late, and the number of runs in the neighborhood can be reduced, and you can end up with some routes that run only once an hour.”
Union Station is about a mile away, offering Amtrak service to cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, and Kansas City’s new international airport is 21 miles away. The station will host numerous events when it hosts the 2026 World Cup. “All eyes will be on Kansas City. This will be our time to shine,” Browne says.
