Walkable community with rich history

Volker is named for Kansas City philanthropist William Volker, who donated much of his fortune in the early 1900s to help struggling Kansas Citians get a leg up. The neighborhood continues to bear Volker’s kind influence as a walkable, dog-friendly place with an engaged neighborhood association. Located 3 miles south of downtown, Volker straddles both sides of the W. 39th Street business district. Volker is a convenient place to call home, offering a blend of residential charm and commercial vitality, especially if you work or study at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KU Med), which is right across the street on the Kansas side of the state line. KU Med is one of 15 Tier 1 medical schools ranked the best in primary care by U.S. News & World Report.

Restaurant Row and local shops

Restaurant Row has diverse dining options, from upscale restaurants to casual hangouts. “Room 39 is one of the best. It isn’t cheap. Two people go there, eat and drink in the evening, and it’s a hundred bucks,” Wayne says. Other local favorites include Fric and Frac for classic bar food, Hi-Dive Lounge for a more upscale bar experience and Alladin Café for Mediterranean food. Local shops include Prospero’s Books & Media, a beloved used bookstore that’s become an anchor tenant in the W. 39th Street corridor.

Volker Neighborhood Association hosts events year-round

The Volker Neighborhood Association organizes annual gatherings such as the Volker Homes Tour in May, the neighborhood’s summer picnic and Volker Porch Parties in August. Its Dumpsters & Cleanups are popular times for getting rid of junk. Dues-paying members of the VNA pay for two dumpsters in the Spring and Fall where locals can finally dump trash, old furniture and brush.
