Eight miles southwest of Newark, Folks living in Kenilworth enjoy a borough full of small-town spirit. “It’s the kind of place where everyone knows each other,” says Luca Lestrade, a former resident and a RE/MAX Associate Realtor. “The last two families we helped find a home there fell in love with the quiet and with how friendly folks are.” He adds, “It doesn’t have the business and noise of places like Elizabeth and Cranford’s downtown.” Taking time to browse the streets, one will find families dining at locally owned restaurants, enjoying nice weather in one of the many parks or simply spending the day in each other’s company in a community where no neighbor feels like a stranger.

Cozy cape cods are in abundance here
Kenilworth’s skinny blocks are chock full of picket-fenced lots where house hunters find brick and siding-faced Cape Cods with attached garages ranging from $400,000 to $700,000. Other offers include split levels, overhangs, Colonial Revivals and new traditional homes with colonial accents. The upper range for these homes is between $700,000 and $1,000,000. “Kenilworth is more affordable than some of its neighbors,” says Lestrade. “For example, the average price in Kenilworth is something like $490,000 while a house in Cranford to the south is more like $650,000.”

David Brearley's Lady Bears are champs
The people of Kenilworth rely largely on two facilities for public education: Warren G. Harding Elementary on Boulevard and David Brearley Middle and High School. Harding Elementary teaches kindergarten through sixth grade, while Brearley covers seventh through to graduation. Brearley gained some popularity in 2022 when its track and field team, the Lady Bears, won the first Union County Conference Championship. Both earn a B-minus grade from Niche.
The Harding school is the elementary grade school in Kenilworth.
Kenilworth's David Brearly houses students in both high school and middle school.

Tee up at Galloping Hill Park and Golf Course
There are close to eight parks of varying sizes in and around Kenilworth. Smaller pocket parks, such as Orange Avenue Park or Ninth Street Park in the borough’s center, provide playgrounds, while larger spaces, such as Black Brook Park in the north, deliver a deeper woodland experience along with its soccer field. Apart from these public spaces, the Galloping Hill Park and Golf Course draws players to tee up and join The Clubhouse at Galloping Hill Golf Course.
Kenilworth residents can spend the day playing 18 holes at Galloping Hill golf course.

The Kenilworth Street Festival is great for car lovers
While Kenilworth has the spirit of a small town, that doesn’t mean nothing happens there. One event that gets attention is the annual Kenilworth Street Festival. Held in May, crowds gather at Boulevard for car shows, exhibits selling merchandise, live performances from cover bands, soloists and dancers, and street food.
Ava's Kitchen and Bar serves gourmet dishes
Many iconic restaurants call Kenilworth home, but Kenilworth Diner and Ava’s Kitchen and Bar along Boulevard are considered landmarks by many. While families pack Kenilworth Diner for brunch, Ava’s Kitchen and Bar draws a nightly crowd of adult friends and couples with gourmet Italian dishes and immaculate cocktails. “Kenilworth is iconic, but Ava’s is the main hangout spot for locals,” says Lestrade, “I’ve been there plenty of times.” Just west up the road and around the corner on South 31st Street, ACME Markets packs its aisles with groceries for anyone running weekend errands. 2 miles west on Springfield Avenue, many journey to snag locally sourced produce at Dryer Farms. The Mall at Short Hills is a 10-mile drive north in the borough of Short Hills.
Ava's is a popular Kenilworth spot to meet with friends or have a quiet lunch.

The intersection is the heart of local traffic
Local traffic relies on two intersecting roads, Boulevard and South Michigan Avenue. All smaller local roads stem from these two meaning both are pivotal for getting around in this car-dependent borough. Public transportation is minimal, with the main bus route 59 flowing through Boulevard and turning right onto South Michigan Avenue. Boulevard is the most important of the two, as many local restaurants, stores and even a school are found along it. The street also leads to a ramp for the Garden State Parkway, a highway cutting through the southeast corner of the borough. The road can take drivers to Newark or Newark Liberty International Airport, 9 miles east.
The Garden State Parkway cuts through Kenilworth with entrances to both north and south.

Highway on the east side
While Kenilworth is a quiet and relaxed place to live for the most part, the Garden State Parkway may be a source of noise for those looking to move into the east side. According to Lestrade’s personal experience, however, the highway doesn’t present too much of an issue. “There’s a lot of tree coverage in that part of the area, which dampens the noise.” He adds, “The area is mostly commercial real estate, so the noise isn’t a significant part of life.”
Kenilworth does have an area which is primarily commercial that houses the Parkway.
The sounds from the Garden State Parkway are primarily buried in commercial areas.
