Classic homes and new developments near the heart of Kenosha

Many of the neighborhoods near the heart of Kenosha are undergoing a transition, and Uptown, about a mile west of the city center and Lake Michigan, is no exception. Redevelopment plans for the neighborhood and elsewhere in the city both began in November 2020, a few months after a police shooting and a period of civil unrest, during which parts of the neighborhood, including several businesses near 22nd Avenue and 63rd Street, were set aflame. Four years later, that same corner brims with the life of newly built workforce apartments, a grocery store and Kenosha’s first dedicated public library for children’s literature. Locals here have the same convenient access to Milwaukee and Chicago that other parts of Kenosha provide, while also being close to the city’s own major draws, including access to the second-largest of the Great Lakes.

Traditional single-family homes and multi-units

Residential properties in Uptown sit on city blocks between maple trees, oaks, hornbeams and lindens, with small yards and sidewalks. The neighborhood’s home market is led by single-family properties and converted multi-unit properties from the 1920s; about one third of residents are homeowners. Buyers can find traditionally styled houses here, including bungalows, Dutch colonials and minimal traditional homes. Some multifamily homes share the traditional home aesthetics, while others use all-brick designs; most of these are made to fit two to four families. Prices generally range from $50,000 to $420,000. “It’s a very rental-heavy market, and it’s changed quite a lot. People had to rebuild, but they’re really trying to bring it back,” says Tony Bitar, a Realtor with eXp Realty. A lifelong Kenosha resident, Bitar has sold homes in town for more than 10 years.

Learning experiences at Kenosha Public Schools

In the Kenosha School District, Uptown’s youngest students are generally assigned to Roosevelt Elementary School, which has a 16:1 student-teacher ratio and earns a B grade on Niche. Mahone Middle School holds a B-minus grade. Indian Trail High School and Academy offers a traditional high school curriculum alongside a magnet program with four career concentrations. Students on the Academy track are admitted through a lottery system and can enroll in programs focused on business, communications, medical sciences or military education. The school earns a B grade on Niche.

Lincoln Park live music in the summer

Uptown’s primary spots for outdoor leisure are just outside of the neighborhood. To the south, Lincoln Park tucks an 18-hole disc golf course, a lush flower garden, walking trails and a fishing pond into 45 acres of recreational space between city blocks. The park is also home to the annual Lincoln Park Live Music Series, an annual set of concerts with Milwaukee and Chicago area acts performing, with food trucks and local vendors close by. “The Mahone Fund led the charge to help something positive take place in the park,” says Steve Bostrom, a broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Epic Real Estate. Bostrom has sold homes in Kenosha for more than five years. West of the neighborhood, Roosevelt Park offers a splash pad for summertime play, a baseball field and courts for tennis and pickleball. The Kenosha Public Library’s KPL Kids @ Uptown Lofts branch opened in Uptown in the summer of 2024. The library hosts story time sessions for up-and-coming readers along with activities like indoor mini-golf and art classes.

Gifts, cigars and brunch under one roof at Coopers Uptown

Casa de Pan Fresh Market opened in the Uptown Lofts in 2024, bringing a grocery store back to the neighborhood after several years. Family Dollar is another nearby option for everyday needs. Tabletop gaming and comic book enthusiasts can find the latest releases at Marblehead’s Games, which also sells collectible figures and hosts weekly board game teaching sessions every Saturday. Bitar points to Coopers Uptown as a notable spot in the neighborhood. At this business, a gift shop, brunch café and cigar humidor all sit under one roof. In a similar style, Shenanigans on 60th offers an Irish pub experience on one side and a beer, wine and spirits store on the other. For fans of Mexican dishes, Isla del Mar is a long-running Kenosha favorite, specializing in red snapper, shrimp tacos and other seafood items.

Dart tournaments at Hattrix Club and The Bull's Eye

Close to the neighborhood’s north side, Hattrix Club hosts dart tournaments and live music alongside its billiards tables and beer garden. A quarter-mile west down 60th Street, The Bull’s Eye is another spot for darts that also hosts weekly meat raffles. East of the neighborhood in downtown Kenosha, the annual Fourth of July fireworks are launched on the lakefront, amplifying the show over the reflective waters of Lake Michigan. Most of the other annual mainstays in town are hosted at Veterans Memorial Park, including the Peanut Butter and Jam concerts in the summertime, the Fall into Fun Festival each October and the Snow Daze Festival and annual tree lighting each December.

65 miles from Chicago

Roosevelt Road runs along the south end of Uptown and connects the neighborhood to greater Kenosha. The neighborhood is about a mile west of the heart of the city downtown. For folks commuting out of town, Milwaukee is about 40 miles north. The center of downtown Chicago, the Loop, is about 65 miles south, and folks can get there by car or by train with the Kenosha Metra station, 1 mile east of the neighborhood. For medical emergencies, Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital is about 6 miles southwest. The nearest airports are Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, about 32 miles north of the area, and Chicago-O’Hare International Airport, 50 miles south.

Important things to know
