Ever since a surprise torrential rain took the Wainiha neighborhood by storm in April of 2018, this close-knit community has been rebuilding its picturesque paradise together. Residents here share an ohana relationship with hometown groves, farms, beaches and trails that nourish their souls.
Love of the land in Wainiha goes far deeper than an unpredictable weather challenge, and it remains a beloved place to experience Kauai’s North Shore. Donna Rice, Realtor Broker with Corcoran Pacific Properties says, “What we experienced in 2018, we refer to as ‘the rain bomb.’ Several landslides shut down roads on the west side leading into Wainiha, and it took a year and half to stabilize and reopen. Since then, everything is thriving again, and it’s as if nothing happened. But what’s so significant about that passage, was that it brought us even closer as a community. We were isolated for a time, and we really pulled together across the whole North Shore. It’s a testament to our remarkable Aloha Spirit.”
As you travel upland from the shore, via Wainiha Powerhouse Road, the densely treed landscape is dotted with plantation-style cottages, blufftop guest houses and magnificent private-access estates that feel off the grid. Closer to the shore, homes branch out from the central Kuhio Highway on neat streets leading to private estates and cul-de-sacs. Some homes have their own tennis courts and privacy is highly respected here. Rice says, “You’ll find a simpler lifestyle in Wainiha, in a rural, townie sort of way. It’s a mountain setting in the tropics. And although that may not be for everyone, the quiet, old Hawaiian aura attracts hippies at heart, musicians, actors and artists who are inspired by the incredible peace and beauty here. It illuminates the creative mind.”
A variety of home types in Wainiha include ocean-oriented condos for under $800,000, and charming, '70s cottages on large lots near the water for around $2.7 million. You’ll also see plantation-style homes custom-designed by renowned architects in 2003 on Makua Beach for around $4 million. One-of-a-kind estates designed by famous stars fetch more than $18 million.

Makua Beach, known as Tunnels Beach, is fringed by ironwood and palm trees. Here, you can dive into the island’s premiere gem for snorkeling and scuba enthusiasts where underwater tunnels formed by lava tubes create a spectacular wonderland. Across Kuhio Highway from the wide, tranquil sand of Haena Beach you can enter the low-ceiling Maniniholo Dry Cave. The cave is named after Maniniholo, a legendary head fisherman of the Menehune, Kauai's mythical little people who stored their catch here. Tales of it being dug by the Menehune still exist; however, it’s also plausible that this mysterious cave formed over thousands of years of wave erosion.
West of the main residential areas along the ocean, you’ll need advance reservations to explore Haena State Park. This marvel marks the end of the Kuhio Highway and the beginning of the roadless wilderness of the NaPali Coast. This is genuinely sacred land to native Hawaiians, falling within the ancient moku (or island district) of Halelea, featuring restored taro fields and a site associated with traditional hula dance. From Haena State Park you can book a permit in advance to day-hike the Kalalau Trail, recognized as one of the world’s most grueling and rewarding hikes. As you round its undulating ledges, you’re treated to jaw-dropping views of the NaPali coast.
At the Hanalei Colony Resort, Napali Art Gallery and Coffee House is a hub for finding photos, paintings and jewelry designed by Kauai artists. It’s also a scrumptious last stop for caffeine and snacks before hitting the Haena State Beach. Next door, residents have been dining on fresh fish tacos and a wide range of surf and turf at the popular Opakapaka Grill and Bar since 2017. “Opakapaka is the only eatery out there past Hanalei,” says Rice. “Tourists do go there, but it’s considered our local restaurant.”
Tucked between homes on a residential street, you’ll find the quaint, emerald-green Wainiha Country Market. It’s cradled in a surround of mist-filled mountains and thick foliage, making this market feel like a welcome hug. Locals step through its country porch to pick up wine, fresh-baked breads, smoothies and locally crafted gifts. And when you need to complete your larger grocery runs, you’re in luck. Just two miles east on Kuhio Highway, there’s a Big Save and the organic-centric Hanalei Market right across the street from each other.
In Wainiha, you’ll feel a deep connection to all the marvel and mystery of nature, and still be within reach of all the comforts of home. Says Rice, “Wainiha is very special. For those looking for a deep sense of Kauai culture and a simple life, it’s a perfect place.”
