A quiet hamlet with access to riverfront trails
The small hamlet of East Kingston is hidden behind the tree line of Kingston City’s newest green space, Sojourner Truth State Park. Located about 3 miles north of the city, East Kingston offers a mix of rural-suburban living, with sparsely populated residential streets removed from the hustle and bustle of U.S. Route 9W. "East Kingston is a bit more rural," says Greg Berardi, principal broker at Berardi Realty, who has decades of experience in the industry. "There are still a few houses that aren't connected to the city's public sewer system. It wasn't that long ago when people used outhouses around there." With quiet residential roads, nearby amenities and within walking distance of some of the city's most popular and newest trails, East Kingston is a quaint little community favored by first-time homeowners on a budget.
Hiking trails through Sojourner Truth State Park
East Kingston is home to the northern half of Sojourner Truth State Park, the city's newest and first state park. What was once a barren and industrial quarry landscape now boasts rugged gravel trails and access to the paved Hudson River Brickyard Trail. While a smaller, active quarry is still nearby, East Kingston's landscape has changed dramatically thanks to Scenic Hudson, a leading environmental nonprofit focusing on sustainability and conservation. A shaded riverfront pavilion with minimalist-modern lounge chairs, picnic tables and a fishing platform offers sweeping views of the Hudson River. The Empire State Trail, which spans 750 miles throughout New York, runs along the park's winding cliffs, while additional paths weave through woodlands, wetlands and meadows brimming with wildflowers. "There are some great trails that loop around the old quarries," Berardi says. "They really turned it into a beautiful park.”
Residents also have access to multiple waterfront parks that border the Hudson. About 2 miles north, Robert E. Post Memorial Park's green fields are dotted with sports courts overlooking the river's banks. Park-goers can strike up a basketball or beach volleyball game while kids run around the playground. Three covered pavilions offer respite from the sun on hot summer days, while picnic-goers can soak up breathtaking views of the river and distant rolling hills. Farther up the road, Charles Rider Park features a public boat ramp that attracts kayakers, canoeists and boaters from around town.
Beach bums can explore the sandy banks of Ulster Landing County Park, about 5 miles north, or Kingston Point Park and Beach, about 3 miles south. Both parks feature similar amenities like picnic areas, playgrounds, sports courts and access to nearby trailheads. However, Kingston Point Park stands out with its BMX racing track and dog park. Rotary Park is right next door, attracting hikers looking to explore the Kingston Point Rail Trail. This thin gravel trail parallels the city's old railroad tracks and offers distant views of the historic Rondout Lighthouse.

Route 9W's box stores and restaurants
Residents are less than 3 miles from dozens of big box stores and restaurants along U.S. Route 9W, also known as Ulster Avenue. Big-box retailers like Walmart Supercenter and Target are scattered along this mile-long strip. Grocers range from Sam's Club for wholesale deals to the ShopRite of Kingston and Aldi. Up the road, the Hudson Valley Mall is the largest nearby shopping plaza, with 19 shops, restaurants and a movie theater.
Restaurants range from casual chains and beloved diners to cozy sit-down bistros. Ninety-Nine Restaurant & Pub is a popular northeast chain known for its casual atmosphere. Cult favorites include its hand-breaded boneless buffalo wings, classic burgers and fall-off-the-bone baby back ribs. Less than 1 mile south, Bowery Dugout has been serving the community since 1947. Its cozy interior and seafood favorites include live Maine lobsters, oysters by the dozen and broiled or grilled salmon filets. Non-seafood items like steak, chicken and pasta are also available.

20th-century colonials and bungalows
Residential streets run east off Main Street. Quiet roads give way to early 1900s colonial-style homes with steep, gabled-front roofs and bungalows on modest lots. The occasional ranch-style and manufactured homes are scattered in between, with sales prices ranging from the low $100,000s to the mid $300,000s. "As an offshoot of Kingston, buyers would choose East Kingston for its affordability over anything else," Berardi says. "But it's close to all the major shopping and the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, so convenience is also a motivating factor." Some of the newest homes on the market are updated, renovated properties with new vinyl flooring and bright and airy kitchens that sell on the higher end of the scale. Detached garages and street parking are the norm, while many forgo fenced-in yards. The neighborhood also earns a CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10, slightly below the national average of 4.
Smaller East Kingston homes tend to be bungalow dwellings.

Volunteer firefighters and festivities

In December, the Fire Company also hosts an annual Brunch with Santa at the local fire station. Breakfast is served before Santa's arrival and ends with a raffle.
