Oldest and southernmost town in Maine

Settled in 1623 and perched on the New Hampshire-Maine state line, Kittery is known for being both the oldest and the southernmost town in the state. Just a stone’s throw away from Kittery across the Piscataqua River is Portsmouth, a port city in New Hampshire. “Kittery has been known as a mini-Portsmouth, but it definitely has its own charm as a small village setting,” says Lisa MacBride, a local Realtor with Gove Group Real Estate who has sold homes in Kittery for more than 20 years. “I live in Portsmouth, and it only takes me five minutes to get to Kittery – I could walk there easily right across the bridge.” As a harborside town, residents here can find a number of boatyards and old New England properties with views of the ocean, in addition to eclectic small-town shopping areas full of local boutiques and eateries. The town has an overall CAP Index crime score of 3, which is lower compared to the national average of 4. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are served by the Kittery School District, which receives a B rating from Niche.

Fitness and events at the Kittery Community Center

A popular gathering spot for locals here is the Kittery Community Center, which offers a range of activities and programs for all ages, including a fitness center with an open gym and after-school programs. “The town took an old school and rehabbed it to establish the community center,” MacBride says. “They do things like pickleball and host indoor farmer’s markets in the wintertime.” The center is also home to the Star Theatre, which supports the town arts community by putting together performances, workshops and movies. “Kittery also borders the Piscataqua River, which is beautiful and connects to the Atlantic Ocean; there are some beautiful parks along the water, and there’s a lighthouse by the coast that people can check out,” MacBride says. She also adds that locals often head down to Seapoint Beach and the adjacent Fort Foster Park for outdoor recreation: “It’s this huge park area and peninsula right on the river and ocean – it’s a great place to walk and have a picnic. It’s just stunning, and people consider it the town’s beach.”

Dine at Lil's Cafe in Wallingford Square

Kittery has three main commerce areas: Wallingford Square, Gourmet Mile along Route 1, and the outlet mall. “Some of the popular Wallingford Square restaurants would be Anneke Jans, Black Birch and this wonderful Indian restaurant called Tulsi. Then there’s the ever-popular Lil’s Café, which has world-famous crullers – you have one bite, and you’re gone; you have to finish the plate!” MacBride says. She then describes the area known locally as Gourmet Mile, which is home to several food stores and cafes, such as Beach Pea Baking Company, Carl’s Meat Market and Golden Harvest Produce Market. “I go there to grocery shop because it’s like a fresh market,” MacBride says. “There’s also a really good Italian place called Terra Cotta Pasta and a fantastic fish market called New England Fishmongers.” Further north is where residents can find Kittery Premium Outlets, a well-known shopping mall full of clothing and accessory stores.

Dutch Colonials and Cape Cod dwellings

Residential neighborhoods near Kittery’s Wallingford Square area are fairly dense, but they get more spread out the further away from the town center. Some homes here date back all the way to the early 1800s, and some were built in the past couple of decades and feature more modern construction. A majority of single-family homes in this area cost between approximately $450,000 and $950,000, although a handful of larger properties do sell in the millions. “Over in Portsmouth, prices are even higher, so I would definitely say Kittery is more affordable in comparison,” MacBride says. Common housing styles here include raised ranch-style dwellings, Dutch Colonials with shingled roofs, Cape Cod homes and classic New England-style properties that feature brick foundations and clapboard siding.

Young learners in kindergarten through third grade can jumpstart their academic journeys at Mitchell Primary School, rated A-minus and named No. 3 on Niche’s 2024 “Best Public Elementary Schools in York County” list. Students in grades four through eight might then head to the B-plus-rated Shapleigh School, ranked in Niche’s top ten public middle schools in York County. Finally, for secondary education, learners can attend Traip Academy, a B-rated institution named No. 3 on Niche’s 2024 “Best Public High Schools in York County” list. Traip Academy partners with the Sanford Regional Technical Center and allows students to explore their post-graduate industries early by taking career and technical education courses; students can also enroll in early college programs and courses through York County Community College (YCCC).

Portsmouth Airport and Portsmouth Hospital only 5 miles away

Interstate 95 borders Kittery, which residents can take to travel north through the state. “York is the town just above Kittery, and then you have Portland just above that, which is booming and has an airport you can fly into,” MacBride says. The Portland International Airport offers a wide range of domestic and international flights and is situated approximately 50 miles away. MacBride says that commuters can also take I-95 south for an hour-long drive into Boston. Only 5 miles away from Kittery is the Portsmouth International Airport, although civilian air travel is generally restricted to direct Allegiant Air flights to and from Florida; across the street from the airport is the Portsmouth Hospital, which has a 24-hour full-service emergency room. Public bus services in this area are operated by the Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation, or COAST; residents can take local Route 44 to connect to Portsmouth or regional Route 100 for transport up toward the city of Somersworth.
