Kline is a laidback township outside Hazelton and Pottsville
Pennsylvania Route 309 winds through the rural township of Kline, leading past dense forests and a handful of residential villages. The quiet community is home to less than 1,500 people and embraces a rural-suburban feel in its verdant landscapes. Most folks live on quiet streets surrounded by undeveloped land, and they can hop on Route 309 to access nearby shopping and dining in cities like Hazleton, less than 10 miles from Kline, and Pottsville, about a 20-mile drive away. “The cities are more populated, so people like to go to the surrounding areas,” says Carlos Mejia, a Realtor with Miracle Real Estate, LLC who has over a decade of experience in the industry. “You can have kids and a family away from the metropolitan crowd.”
Residential villages with a range of housing styles and few listings
Most residents live in unincorporated villages like Kelayres, McAdoo Heights and Haddock. These communities sit near state Route 309 and offer a neighborhood-like feel complemented by a countryside setting. Architectural styles vary throughout the township, although bi-level, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes are the norm. These residential developments also feature National-style homes with shed-roof porches.
Properties rarely come on the market in Kline. “The problem here is that there are no brand-new houses,” Mejia says. As of mid-2025, five homes have sold over the last year, with prices ranging from around $100,000 for a manufactured home to $300,000 for a ranch-style house with distant mountain views. According to a Homes.com calculation, which uses a combination of estimate data, the average home value in the township was around $210,000 in mid-2025.
A Schuylkill County township in the Hazleton Area School District
Students live in the Hazleton Area School District, which consists of the C-minus-rated McAdoo-Kelayres Elementary/Middle School and B-minus-rated Hazleton Area High School. High school course offerings such as Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses allow juniors and seniors to earn college credit. Nearby private schools include Marian Catholic High School, which earns a B-plus from Niche.
A local park near lakes, state game lands and the Poconos Mountains
Veteran’s Memorial Park is the township’s only green space. It sits along the Kline-McAdoo border and has a playground, picnic pavilion, ball fields and a basketball court. McAdoo hosts various events in the park, with free movie nights and dances standing out as a summertime favorite. Kline is within 15 miles of two state parks: Tuscarora State Park and Locust Lake State Park. Both parks have lakes for swimming, fishing and boating near Locust Mountain. The mountain itself is a popular hiking spot, with nature trails leading outdoorsmen up to a scenic overlook with panoramic views of Schuylkill County. Hunters can head to State Game Lands 227, about 10 miles from the township. Kline is also west of the Poconos Mountains region, a four-season destination for outdoor recreation where activities range from whitewater rafting to skiing and snowboarding.
Essentials in town, with more options a short drive away along PA 309
Although shopping and dining are limited, residents can grab the necessities in Kline at Dollar General, Good Neighbor Pharmacy and Boyer’s Food Markets. There are more shops and restaurants farther south along the PA 309 corridor. The township is within 6 miles of Walmart and local eateries like Skips Dairy Bar & Grill and Basile’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, known for its homemade pasta sauces and hand-tossed pies. Locals can follow PA 309 north to downtown McAdoo, which hosts a handful of small businesses like Bella Luna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria. Hazleton is less than a 10-mile drive away and is a destination to explore local businesses downtown, run errands at chains like Lowe’s and shop at the Laurel Mall.
Major highways connect Kline to nearby cities and industrial parks
Kline is a heavily car-dependent area. The township’s main thoroughfares are PA 309 and Interstate 81, which connect residents to the rest of Schuylkill County and beyond. With highway access, Kline is about 20-mile drive from Pottsville and within 50 miles of bigger cities like Reading and Allentown. For flights, residents are around 50 miles from both Lehigh Valley International Airport and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. Healthcare is available at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton, less than 10 miles away. Construction is underway on the Hazleton Logistics Park, a master-planned industrial development in Kline whose first building is a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse for Samsung. The township is also within 15 miles of three major industrial parks in the Hazleton area: the McAdoo Industrial Park, Humboldt Industrial Park and Valmont Industrial Park.
