A historic mix of old Appalachia and new Knoxville
Bonny Kate, named for Tennessee’s most famous pioneer woman, is a mix of old Appalachia and new Knoxville - affectionately known as "SoKno" to the locals. This suburb occupies mountainous terrain near the Appalachian range and is covered in greenery. Evergreens and old oaks wrapped in wisteria and kudzu wall the mountainous roads that snake through the region. "The nature is just beautiful," says Anita Shoffner, Realtor with Crossroads Realty and lifelong resident of the area. "It's the kind of place where you can go pick your own blueberries or blackberries." New subdivisions are cropping up regularly here as residents who work downtown move, seeking more bang for their buck or more land for their kids.
A variety of vintage styles
Homes here range from large millennial mansions on big lots in planned communities to midcentury brick ranchers on 1 or 2 acres. There are still old farmhouses sitting on expansive plots, and spacious log cabins can be found lining some ridges of the small mountains in Bonny Kate. The winding roads prove as ideal for cyclists as they are problematic for tractors. Prices range from $375,000 to $500,000 - though there are some more historic, larger homes in the area that can go for around $1 million.

Beautiful country, right outside the city
To say that Bonny Kate features an abundance of nearby nature for residents to take advantage of would be an understatement, with 20-acre French Memorial Park the resident green space of the neighborhood. Two waterways are also present: Fort Loudoun Lake and Twin Creek. Boaters can launch from Fort Loudoun Lake and navigate to the Tennessee River or fish in the creek. Newer residents have brought the sport of cycling with them, and it’s not unusual to see packs on two wheels flying past tractors on the hilly roads.

Events going on all year
The historic Marble Springs cabin and farm, childhood home to Bonny Kate’s husband, first Tennessee Gov. John Sevier, borders the neighborhood. Now a museum it offers lessons of the past, with pie-making workshops, and activities for the present, with yoga classes on its spacious grounds. Wender Farms is a working microgreens operation where residents can buy alfalfa, mushrooms and more. "There's always something fun to do every season," says Shoffner. "Knoxville has a ton of festivals and all of them bring out huge crowds."

Just minutes from downtown Knoxville
Night owls will be glad to discover downtown Knoxville, with its heritage bluegrass and country music scene only about 7 miles away. The city is growing rapidly with a burgeoning culture and food scene, but it still feels like a mountain hideaway in Bonny Kate.
