A historic, charming suburb in Knoxville
Incorporated as an official “streetcar suburb” to Knoxville in 1889, Old North Knoxville is undeniably one of the city’s most treasured historic areas. It’s truly a time capsule for homes of the early- to mid-1900s, and the city has worked tirelessly to preserve its elegant atmosphere. “We have beautiful homes and parks, and we’re very close walking distance to Old City in Knoxville and outdoor recreation on the river,” says Kelly Arsenault, a Realtor with First Neighborhoods Realty who was born and raised in the Knoxville area. “Personally, there's so much to do just 5 minutes from me.” For those who love the lure and antiquity of historic districts while still seeking a friendly community and central location, Old North Knoxville is a classic choice. “I lived here for three years while I was a student, and I loved it. Homes hold onto their historic charm but offer modern comforts. It’s a highly sought-after area for that charm, but you’ve also got access to awesome spots in North Central,” says Ben Barredo, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Wallace who works in the Knoxville area.
Potluck dinners, annual community events
If you’re new to the area and want to get acquainted, Old North has a Victorian Holiday Home Tour, along with monthly potluck dinners, ice cream socials and plenty of opportunities to get involved with the community garden. Some residents come together during the week for religious meetings at North Knoxville Baptist Church, and Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Old North Knoxville hosts many community-led events throughout the year, including an EarthFest, a Festival on the 4th and a Christmas Parade.
Shop and dine in Happy Holler
On any given day, they’ll be locals walking around and exploring Happy Holler Historic District, a three-block radius of boutiques, record shops, antique stores and cafés. The Original Freezo is a beloved Knoxville ice cream stand that’s been serving people since the1940s. Residents can stop into Central Cinema to watch screenings of arthouse and cult classic films or check out Wild Love Bakehouse for scratch-made baked goods. Happy Holler is also home to Three Rivers Market, a community staple and Tennessee’s first and only food co-op. Not Watson's Kitchen + Bar is a new spot known for its American staples.
