Elegance and ease along the Pacific
Sparkling La Jolla Shores stretches along the San Diego beachfront as both a vacation destination and a residential harbor. “La Jolla Shores’ elevated lifestyle is hard to find, even in other La Jolla neighborhoods,” says Sanjay Solomon, a top-selling La Jolla Realtor with Exude Realty. “Very few locations in San Diego have its blend of accessibility, relaxed walkability, upscale amenities, and fantastic schools — all with a true community feel.” Locals launch out in kayaks at the shore or travel in golf carts to a luxury resort with private beach access. It’s the kind of community where biking or walking to parks, shops and eateries happens year-round. Plus, major coastal and inland freeways flank the neighborhood, for easy access to the rest of San Diego and beyond.
Brick and Bell Cafe is a popular place to relax and chat with neighbors.

La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Birch Aquarium
Residents often hold memberships at both the Birch Aquarium, to enjoy year-round exploration of more than 60 habitats, and the award-winning La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club resort. In 2023, the club partnered with the Birch Aquarium to fund its unique potbelly seahorse exhibit. “La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club isn’t exclusive to just La Jolla Shores residents,” adds Solomon, “but living within a short golf-cart ride is a huge plus.” Club members can play tennis on 12 hard courts, sip cocktails by the pool and golf on the resort’s nine-hole, par-3 course. Access to a private beach is also one of the club’s perks, allowing members to relax in a cabana, paddleboard and snorkel in serene waters, or host elegant dinners on the sand.
La Jolla Shores also brims with ecological gems. Locals swim with friendly leopard sharks that return each summer to this crescent of shore, and snorkelers seek a menagerie of wildlife in the 6,000-acre San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park. Hikers head to the Scripps Coastal Meander Trail or the Birch Aquarium path. Sea caving tours are also available through expedition agencies, as well as surfing lessons with Surf Diva.
The Birch Aquarium gets visitors up close and personal with sea life.

Avenida de la Playa dining, new MRKT Space
Eateries from upscale to casual include Caroline’s Seaside Café , a favorite spot to linger over coffee and brunch on the patio, and surfers walk right from the beach into Shore Rider Bar for refreshment. Along the main Avenida de la Playa corridor, the Italian trattoria Piatti folds the aroma of stone-hearth pizzas into the soft salt breeze. Across Avenida de la Playa, trendy new MRKT Space opened its second U.S. location in 2022 and is fast becoming the go-to for beach gear, organic groceries and gourmet meals. There’s also a Trader Joe’s two miles northeast, on Villa La Jolla Drive.

Blufftop estates to inland condos
Designed as an oceanside community, La Jolla Shores’ curvy, thickly treed streetscapes slope gently toward the shore and hold a variety of appealing home styles. For around $2.5 million, homebuyers can find inland ranch-style cottages or condos that are just a 5-minute walk to the beach. Blufftop estates with panoramic views average $6 million, and beach-access mansions fetch between $5 million and $25 million. New-construction homes underway will likely push the pricing barrier. “Views from homes East of La Jolla Shores Drive sweep from Mount Soledad to La Jolla Village and across the ocean,” Solomon says. “Homes west of La Jolla Shores Drive also have beautiful views but tend to be smaller than those on the hill, although they’re closer to the beach.”
Ranch style homes with unique landscaping are throughout quiet neighborhoods of La Jolla Shores.

Easy transit options, near San Diego International Airport
San Diego International Airport is only a 12-mile drive south, or residents can opt for San Diego Metro Transit at bus stops along La Jolla Shores Drive. At the Old Town Transit Center, the free Old Town Flyer — courtesy of the airport — heads directly to the terminals from 5 a.m. to midnight. “La Jolla Shores allows residents to be at the beach in 5 minutes or less, La Jolla Village in 10 minutes and to the freeways in 10 minutes or less,” Solomon says. “Getting stuck in traffic in and out of La Jolla is a big issue, and living in La Jolla Shores all but eliminates that hassle.”
La Jolla Shores is a coastal haven with a comfortable vibe.
