The Nisqually Indian Community is a small yet culturally rich area that serves as the home of the Nisqually Tribe. Located about 15 miles east of Olympia, the community is steeped in history and tradition, with the Nisqually River playing a central role in the lives of its residents. The Nisqually have inhabited the region for thousands of years and have made efforts to preserve and protect the land and its resources. The tribe’s greater reservation spans over 5,000 acres, but the 3,000-acre portion of the reservation north of the Nisqually River is controlled by the Fort Lewis Army base, which was created without tribal consent in 1917 and is still a matter of contention for the tribe. While the Nisqually Indian Community itself is mostly made up of residential and wilderness areas, it's just a short drive from the community to the major retail centers found in Lacey and Olympia.

The Fishing Wars
The Nisqually River and its surrounding forests play a central role in community life and recreational activities. Tribal members engage in traditional practices such as fishing, hunting and gathering of native plants for food and medicinal purposes. The local community was an instrumental part of the ‘Fish Wars’ legal cases of the 1960s and 1970s, which secured native fishing salmon fishing rights in Washington State. Before these rights were established, some members of the community were arrested dozens of times for salmon fishing on the Nisqually. As for public parks, the Nisqually Youth and Community Center serves as a hub for various activities and programs, including cultural education, Little League and after-school programs. The 3,000-acre Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, while not on reservation land, is located just north of the community, the Nisqually River Delta. The refuge is named after Billy Frank Jr., a prominent Nisqually tribal member and environmental activist who played a crucial role in the fight for tribal fishing rights.

Getting off the reservation
The vast majority of residents within the Nisqually Indian Community depend on cars to get around. The main access to the reservation is via state Route 510, which connects to Interstate 5 to the west, and to the nearby towns of Lacey and Yelm. Public transportation options are limited.
