Longtime neighbors look out for each other in east Lafayette suburb
On Lafayette's east side, Orchard Heights is a quiet, residential suburb where midcentury homes sit on spacious, grassy lots. Homes are in high demand, reflecting the neighborhood's well-kept looks and friendly attitude. This is a community of long-term residents — some for 50-plus years — who look out for one another. "My grandparents still live there, so they all know each other very well," says Lauren Whitaker, Realtor with Silver Lining Real Estate Group and lifelong Lafayette resident. "Unfortunately, some have passed away, but they all come together as a neighborhood and support one another. The neighbors across the street will shovel my grandparents' driveway."

Midcentury homes with equity
Orchard Heights is almost entirely residential except for two churches on the west side. Homes sit far back from the street on well-kept, grassy lots about half of an acre — large enough for a playset in the front yard. This area is full of brick, midcentury ranch-style homes with low-pitched roofs, and the occasional split level. Both can have attached multi-car garages. On the inside, properties may need minor cosmetic updates to bring them into the 21st century, Whitaker says. But that doesn't hinder the competitive housing market. "When people move there, it doesn't matter if the home is stuck in the '50s or '60s; people buy no matter what because they're walking into equity," she says. "It's such a desirable neighborhood that if they decide to sell in a year, they can make a profit." Prices can range from $250,000 to $380,000.
