Rural Lafayette hamlet with an improvement mindset
Stockwell, Indiana is a small community surrounded by corn and soybean fields, but it doesn't just blend in with the scenery. In this rural hamlet located 12 miles south of Lafayette, Indiana, residents work hard to keep the community clean, starting at a young age. Cole Elementary offers an outdoor education
Cole Elementary, named for one of the area's first settlers, provides a hands-on education. The Outdoor Education Center includes a wetland area with walkways, an amphitheater and a one-acre pond where kids can fish. "School has to be experiential because that's how kids learn," Pinto says. "So that's the approach we take." The school earns a B-plus from Niche. Kids can also attend Wainwright Middle, which earns a B, and McCutcheon High, which earns a B-plus.
There is an outdoor education center at James Cole Elementary School.
Wainwright Middle School has a student to teacher ratio of 16 to 1.
McCutcheon High School received a B+ on Niche.

Locals help to keep Stockwell beautiful
Stockwell succeeds at maintaining picturesque green spaces. Stockwell Park has a paved basketball court and two baseball diamonds where local teams compete. It also includes a concessions stand with snacks to enjoy during the game. In the center of town, there is a generous grassy space dotted by trees. The area includes a playground and picnic tables for relaxing beneath the shade. Keep Stockwell Beautiful hosts annual improvement efforts like bulk trash and tire collection and a youth project through which fourth and fifth graders help clean up the community and plant flowers and trees.

Vintage homes on quiet streets
Houses are organized on quiet streets that branch out from the town's main north-south thoroughfare. Stockwell has a variety of home styles, dating from 1900 through the 2010s. Sidewalks are available along the main road, connecting to the town park and church. Two- and three-bedroom homes range from $140,000 to $270,000.

Locals are loyal to their town's only restaurant. Clyde's Bistro serves a towering club sandwich for breakfast or lunch with house-made pasta salad and an iced coffee. A variety of stores and restaurants line Veterans Memorial Parkway on Lafayette's south side. There, Walmart offers a full selection of grocery departments. Rice and Noodle Thai Street Food serves a variety of textures and flavors, from crunchy crab rangoons to silky mango curry.

Stockwell's small-town events might match up to the city's. "We have a farmers market that rivals the vendors in Lafayette," Pinto says. The event has a different theme each month, including Plants and Crafts, Halloween and Fall Decor, and Baked Goods and Books. Stockwell Community Church hosts an annual car show featuring awards for the top ten cars.
Rural living requires a car
Getting to and from Stockwell typically requires a car. Lafayette commuters can take U.S. 52 to get downtown. The highway is just 2 miles east of Stockwell. Public buses do not reach the town, although kids have access to school buses. Franciscan Health Lafayette East has an emergency center and many other services about 10 miles from Stockwell.
