North Lafayette neighborhood has been a family destination for decades
On Lafayette's northeast side, Vinton Highlands is an established destination for people seeking to settle down. It's the kind of place where kids walk the quiet, residential streets to meet up with friends on the weekends. "It's been a great family neighborhood for decades now," says Matt Smith, Realtor with the Spencer Childers Group of Keller Williams Lafayette, who has been working in Lafayette and surrounding counties for 10 years.
Smith appreciated that family-friendly vibe as a kid growing up in the neighborhood. "I think because of the price point in the neighborhood, there were a lot of starter homes, so there were a lot of other kids around, a lot of sidewalks and good places to play and ride a bike," he says. With a median single-family home price about $40,000 below the city's, it remains a sought-after niche within Lafayette. Residents still walk to local parks, nearby schools or within the neighborhood for some quality time with neighbors.

The neighborhood is made up of a wide mix of homes, each adding something different. Dating between the '60s and the '90s, there are a few common styles, such as brick ranches, raised ranches, bi-levels and Cape Cods, yet no two homes are exactly the same. Home exteriors often feature a splash of color — brightly painted front doors, window shutters, roof gables and garage doors are part of the neighborhood character. Ranches can cost between $170,000 and $260,000, depending on the amount of updates needed. Low-traffic cul-de-sacs and wide front driveways offer a safe space for a game of basketball out front. Sidewalks also offer a safe way to get around the neighborhood.

New parks facilities are close by
Green spaces are close enough to walk or bike. Thanks to investment from the city, they also feature new amenities. Munger Park, located just south, is one of this neighborhood's big draws. A large pond is the park's centerpiece, offering a space for fishing and a pretty view from the mile-long trail. Smith says he spent plenty of time here as a child. "Riding a bike around the lake was a really nice experience," he says. A large shelter offers a space to relax in the shade. In 2023, the park received a shiny new orange, green and blue play structure. The 4,000-square-foot playground now features a tall rock wall and a spider web climbing net. Further south, McCaw Park received 12 lighted, wheelchair-accessible pickleball courts in 2018.
