Woods Cove has homes along the waterfront
Woods Cove is a vibrant community with a mix of residential properties, local dining options and hotels just over a mile from the downtown Laguna Beach area. This neighborhood encompasses and is named after Woods Cove Beach, an outdoor spot along the waterfront known for its tide pools and bright blue waters. “People really love Woods Cove because it’s got some of the most charming beach cottages,” says Michael “Mike” Johnson, a longtime Laguna Beach resident and Realtor with the Mike Johnson Group at Compass. “I mean a lot of people here – millionaires, even billionaires – they can afford to live in any house they want, but they still choose to own these 2,000 square foot cottages in Woods Cove.” Alongside the thatched-roof bungalows, the neighborhood’s sloping streets are lined with an assortment of coastal greenery, California palms and eucalyptus trees, giving this community a lush, almost resort-like atmosphere.
Vintage cottages and contemporary Craftsman builds
Many of the homes in Woods Cove are custom-built and have undergone renovations and upgrades for modern amenities. Vintage properties that date back to the first half of the 20th century are typically Craftsman-style cottages with quintessential beach bungalow features like shingled siding and stone chimneys. Other architectural styles in this neighborhood include Mediterranean-style and contemporary Craftsman builds that date from the 1970s through the 90s. With luxurious designs and direct views of the Pacific Ocean, homes along the bluffs of Woods Cove are some of the most coveted properties in the area. These waterfront single-family homes start around $5 million and range upwards of $10 million. Single-family properties throughout the rest of the neighborhood usually cost between $2 million and $5 million. Condo units and townhouses can range from roughly $1 million to $9 million for oceanfront apartments.
Community involvement in local Laguna Schools
Students in Woods Cove are zoned for the Laguna Beach Unified School District, which receives an overall A-plus rating from Niche. Depending on their address, primary students in Woods Cove are either zoned for the A-rated Top of the World Elementary School or the A-plus-rated E Morro Elementary School. Older students can attend the A-rated Thurston Middle and Laguna Beach High School, an A-plus-rated institution. These schools partner closely with community organizations and have strong Parent-Teacher Association groups that help promote and support faculty, staff and students. “There was once an article in the local newspaper about an event that was going on at the high school, and at the bottom, it said to call a specific person for tickets – turns out that person is a billionaire, a billionaire who just published their phone number in the paper for a Laguna Beach school event,” Johnson says.
City beaches, parks and popular scenic overlooks
In addition to Woods Cove Beach, residents in this neighborhood are also within walking distance of Pearl Street Beach and Agate Street Beach, small side-by-side beaches known for being two of the best spots in town to view the sunset. Another popular overlook in Woods Cove is Ruby Street Park, which has shaded benches and tables. The larger Victoria Beach and adjacent Treasure Island Beach – which sit on either side of the Montage resort bluffs – are a 1.5-mile drive south of the neighborhood. Situated inland, less than a mile from Woods Cove, is Bluebird Park, a bustling community spot with playgrounds and an open green space that hosts a free concert series in the summertime.
Restaurants in Woods Cove and downtown Laguna Beach
There are several local restaurants in Woods Cove that line either side of Coast Highway, a busy road that cuts through the neighborhood. Mozambique is an upscale steakhouse with a rooftop seating area that overlooks the ocean; right next door is Saigon Beach, a Vietnamese eatery owned by a local husband-and-wife duo. Other dining options include Rumari, an Italian bistro, and Maro Wood Grill, a restaurant that serves Argentinian fare in a casual setting. Wine Gallery is a woodfire kitchen and wine bar open in the evenings that also has appetizers and a selection of surf and turf menu items. Grocery stores, local businesses and additional dining choices can be found farther north along Coast Highway in and around the downtown Laguna Beach area, known locally as the Village.
Coast Highway has pedestrian-friendly amenities
Although Woods Cove residents typically use their cars to get around town, the neighborhood itself is fairly walkable and features amenities like pedestrian crossings at every intersection along Coast Highway, the town’s main thoroughfare. Many homes here have short driveways in which residents can park their cars; street parking is also available, although open spots become harder to find during tourist season. To avoid driving and parking downtown, residents can catch a ride on the free Laguna Beach Trolley that stops at several points along Coast Highway.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
