Lakeside life year-round

Between Chicago and Milwaukee, Bohners Lake is a rural lakeside community that foregoes the population fluctuations common to other lakeside communities. Steve Downey, owner of Von-Dowmen German Shepherds, says the area was almost all summer homes before he lived there. “There are a few summer homes,” he says. “But now it’s becoming more permanent homes.” The neighborhood is peaceful and home to little else besides a couple of restaurants, a few convenience stores and a collection of differing home styles.

Bohner Lake

Bohner Lake offers boaters, paddleboarders and swimmers 135 acres of freshwater to enjoy. “The town has been concerned about spending money on the lake,” Downey says. “But it’s a beautiful lake.” With a maximum depth of 30 feet and a stock of panfish, largemouth bass and northern pike, the lake is popular with local anglers. Louis Fago Park offers old-school metal playground equipment, swings and a basketball court off Robers Street, near the southeast shore of Bohners Lake. The John Margis Wildlife Area—just northeast of the lake, off Fish Hatchery Road—holds 44 acres of marshland and wildlife. The former state fish hatchery is characterized by a stretch of boardwalk that takes nature lovers out over the marshlands, providing expansive views of the area’s natural landscape and wildlife.

A wide range of home styles and prices

Downey, who’s lived in Bohners Lake since he was two, describes the neighborhood as a small, quiet community mostly home to people who live there year-round. Newer homes are popping up in the area, but homes span the decades from the mid-nineteen hundreds to the 2000s. Styles range from single-story ranch homes to cabins, traditional two-story homes and large, lakeside manors. Smaller cabins and ranch-style homes sell from $100,000 to $300,000. Bigger homes away from the lake start at around $200,000, while large homes on the lake sell as high as $740,000. The median home price is $294,950, a 3% drop from the previous year.

Small cookouts at home, big celebrations in Burlington

Within Bohners Lake, neighbors occasionally hold block parties. The town sporadically organizes public picnics on the local beaches, selling hot dogs and other food to raise money to care for the beaches. Larger events, Downey says, are held five miles north in Burlington. “They have parades for Memorial Day, and they have a carnival,” Downey says. “On Thursday nights, there’s a farmers market at Wemhoff Square, next to the library.” The carnival, known as the Burlington Jamboree, is a summer celebration featuring live music, live acrobatic performances and pig, goat and duck races.

A couple of options to shop and dine

The closest major grocery store is Berkot’s Super Foods, five miles north in Burlington. Bohners Lake does hold a few options for shopping and dining, though prices tend to be a little higher than those in Burlington. On South Lakeshore Drive, Beachview Grocery sells cold drinks, fresh sandwiches and small grocery items. The Rustic Barrel offers antiques and unique gifts off McHenry Street, north of the lake. On Fish Hatchery Road, Forever Vos Farms hosts a store where they sell meats from their farm’s stock of chickens, cows and pigs. When locals would rather dine out, there’s Countryside Pub on the south end of town and Burlington Tap and Smokehouse to the north.
