Lakeside life year-round
Between Chicago and Milwaukee, Bohners Lake is a rural lakeside community that foregoes the population fluctuations common to other lakeside communities. Steve Downey, owner of Von-Dowmen German Shepherds, says the area was almost all summer homes before he lived there. “There are a few summer homes,” he says. “But now it’s becoming more permanent homes.” The neighborhood is peaceful and home to little else besides a couple of restaurants, a few convenience stores and a collection of differing home styles.

Bohner Lake
Bohner Lake offers boaters, paddleboarders and swimmers 135 acres of freshwater to enjoy. “The town has been concerned about spending money on the lake,” Downey says. “But it’s a beautiful lake.” With a maximum depth of 30 feet and a stock of panfish, largemouth bass and northern pike, the lake is popular with local anglers. Louis Fago Park offers old-school metal playground equipment, swings and a basketball court off Robers Street, near the southeast shore of Bohners Lake. The John Margis Wildlife Area—just northeast of the lake, off Fish Hatchery Road—holds 44 acres of marshland and wildlife. The former state fish hatchery is characterized by a stretch of boardwalk that takes nature lovers out over the marshlands, providing expansive views of the area’s natural landscape and wildlife.
The eponymous Bohner Lake holds 135 acres of freshwater.
